About The Position

The purpose of Utah’s Hogle Safety/EMS Department is to provide a professional level of service in all areas of security, safety, and emergency first-aid to all guests, staff, volunteers, and vendors. Officers will maintain a visible presence on grounds to act as rule enforcement, safety guides, walking “signposts” to help guide and answer guest questions, and first-aid. Officers may be called to assist in a variety of zoo incidents, emergencies, or needs. Utah’s Hogle Zoo Safety/EMS Department operates as organizational security, and first-aid. Applicants with security and/or EMT certifications will be looked at more favorably. All Safety/EMS Officers MUST have current BLS and Stop-The-Bleed certifications, and be willing and able to render first aid, respond to security-related calls, communicate with guests and staff, and be standing or walking most of the day. This position is a non-benefited variable-hour position with a variety of five-hour-long shifts available via a bidding system each month. Available shifts will increase during spring-fall seasons, and decrease slightly in the winter. Utah’s Hogle Zoo Security department is staffed year-round including on weekends and holidays, in inclement weather, and throughout the day. Requirements

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possess a positive attitude with the ability to work with diverse staff, volunteers, and guests.
  • Excellent interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure and make sound judgments during emergencies.
  • Strong leadership and decision-making skills.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent Required.
  • Basic Life Support and Stop-The-Bleed Certifications Required.
  • Utah’s Hogle Zoo is a drug-free workplace. All employees are subject to random drug testing.
  • Provide a negative TB test prior to hire date and maintain TB testing through course of employment.
  • Requires a valid driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • State of Utah/National EMS Certification AND/OR State of Utah Security Guard License Preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Foot patrols and active monitoring of Zoo grounds, parking lot, buildings, etc.
  • Assisting Guest Services staff in providing excellent service and communication to all zoo guests
  • Provide excellent first-aid care to staff and guests
  • Respond in an emergency situation in roles ranging from patient care to incident command, to liaison with 911 and outside emergency personnel
  • Monitor guests and vendors for rules violations, theft, vandalism, etc.
  • Enforce zoo rules and help cultivate an environment and culture of safety
  • Assist the public and staff with minor vehicle-related problems
  • Ensure proper and thorough reporting of incidents and medical calls
  • Help reunite lost children with their parents/guardians
  • Act in supporting roles to assist zoo staff in a variety of possible situations and emergencies as needed
