About The Position

Under general supervision, the primary purpose of this position is to assist the teacher in implementing daily activities for students. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned as necessary. Assist the teacher in implementing daily activities for special education students to meet IFSP/IEP goals. Assist with the daily activities of students, providing a safe, positive and stimulating learning environment. Perform various routine procedures such as positioning, diapering and feeding the students. Maintain the classroom in a clean and orderly condition. Maintain necessary records on students (e.g. data sheets, position charts, toileting charts, medication sheets, etc.). Adhere to the principles of the LIFESPAN ChOICES Training Curriculum. Ensure that the students are engaged and supervised at all times; interact with the students with eye contact, smile, handshake, pat on the back, etc. in a positive, polite and respectful way. Follow the daily schedule. Communicate professionally with all students, parents, visitors, coworkers, case managers, etc. Abide by, enforce and participate in the implementation and ongoing oversight of all LIFESPAN safety standards and regulations. Collects data to document individual student progress on IEP/IFSP goals. Participate in professional conferences, training programs and continuing education as required. Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities. QualificationsQualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. One year experience in a child care setting or working with special education students preferred. North Carolina Early Childhood Credentials; OR must be enrolled and successfully acquire NC EC credentials within 6 months of hire. Physical Requirements Must be physically able to exert up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force or constantly carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects (e.g. strollers). Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work; position requires walking, standing, stooping, reaching, crouching, etc for brief periods of time. Must be able to lift and carry weights of approximately twenty pounds. Will lift no more than forty pounds independently. Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Computer Skills This person should have knowledge of and be able to use a variety of office and other equipment relevant to performing the essential duties of the position. Mathematical Skills Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Language Skills Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Other Skills and Abilities Written and verbal communication skills are required. Ability to work well with others. Ability to responsibly and confidentially handle sensitive student information.
