About The Position

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the city. The Bureau of Police and Security (BPS) is responsible for protecting the New York City water supply and the associated critical infrastructure from terrorism, pollution and crime. In addition, the Bureau is also responsible for establishing on-site procedures intended to minimize the potential impact on human health and the environment in the event of a hazardous material incident. To accomplish our mission, the Bureau is divided into three divisions: the Police Department which patrols the upstate water supply; the Security Division which employees private security guards for protecting in city facilities and which designs and implements security systems for the water supply system; and the Division of Emergency Response and Technical Assessment (DERTA) which responds to hazardous material emergencies with in the city by evaluating the characteristics of the materials involved and making technical decisions concerning containment, abatement and disposal. The selected candidate will be assisting with the review of engineering drawings and designs, research into new technologies, and development of security systems. The intern will also be responsible for assisting engineers with documentation, scanning and reviewing drawings, performing site and facility assessments. Some field work will be required. In addition, the summer intern will develop a final presentation to display assignments they have been involved with while working as an intern at the DEP Interns Closing Ceremony.

Requirements

• As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
• NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
