Senior Broadcast Operations Manager WFAE, Charlotte’s NPR station, is an award-winning multiplatform newsroom (radio, digital, podcasts, live events) committed to delivering high-quality local news and engagement that meets the needs of our diverse community. We are seeking a detail-oriented professional with strong technical skills and a passion for public media. In this role, you will oversee the scheduling of radio programs, underwriting messages, and other content, ensuring a smooth and efficient broadcast flow. You will collaborate closely with programming, sales, and other departments to ensure content airs as scheduled and adheres to station standards. This position plays a vital role in ensuring the efficient distribution of multimedia content. This role is part of the SAG-AFTRA bargaining unit.

Requirements

  • Proficiency with computers, radio automation systems, and digital editing software (e.g., Content Depot, Enco, AudioVAULT, Adobe Audition).
  • Thorough knowledge of radio broadcast equipment and systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Flexibility to work varied schedules, including nights and weekends.
  • Strong computer skills, accurate typing, and ability to learn new software.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Familiarity with non-profit public radio operations, programming, and FCC regulations.
  • 5-7 years of media experience, preferably in operations; on-air broadcast experience preferred.
  • 2+ years of supervisory/management experience.

Responsibilities

  • Report to the Program Director and support other departments to ensure smooth and consistent station operations.
  • Direct the production, including voicing, editing, producing, and scheduling imaging and promo spots
  • Serve as a regular voice-tracking talent
  • Be a fill-in host/ announcer/board operator as needed.
  • Oversight for the daily operations of the radio station, ensuring compliance with FCC rules and regulations.
  • Maintain accurate schedules, records, discrepancy reports, and communications.
  • Serve as a primary technical expert for Audio-Vault and maintain documentation for systems changes and updates
  • Execute short- and long-term goals, objectives, projects, policies, and procedures in alignment with WFAE strategic priorities.
  • Develop and maintain documentation systems for operations, volunteers, equipment, and compliance activities including prepare reports as needed.
  • Advise and assist the Program Director in planning, implementing, and evaluating modifications to operations and systems.
  • Act as secondary PRSS/PRX administrator; support program-related distribution and promotional material.
  • Provide broadcast staff with clear documentation and problem-solving resources.
  • Train and support staff in the use of studio technology and software.
  • Support fundraising efforts including pledge drives, events, studio productions, and post-production projects as scheduled.
  • Assist Program Director with reporting, documentation, and ASCAP/BMI reports.
  • Creates all daily programming logs and automation playlists for all broadcast channels to maintain compliance with FCC rules and regulations.
  • Accurately enters and schedules underwriters and promotional spots following standard operating procedures and works closely with the Underwriting team to maintain an accurate underwriter sales grid.
  • Track all underwriter sales contracts and communicate with sales staff when contracts end or conflicts occur within the broadcast logs.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
