Our Materials Engineering Product Design team is dedicated to designing new materials that influence and enable innovative enclosure designs across all of our product lines year after year. We work with the utmost attention to detail, directly impacting the design of products that millions of people around the world love! As part of the Materials Engineering Product Design Engineering team at Apple, you will help design the next generation of the world's finest electronic devices. You will drive the rapid advancement of materials and processes that are used on the glass enclosures of all Apple products. You will be tasked with designing new coatings for glass enclosure parts, defining the relevant qualification criteria, setting coating material specifications, and working with our multi-functional teams to bring these materials to scale. You will work closely with many different multi-functional teams including Industrial Design, Operations, and Reliability. Responsibilities

  • Design new coatings for glass enclosure parts.
  • Define relevant qualification criteria for coatings.
  • Set coating material specifications.
  • Work with multi-functional teams to bring materials to scale.
  • Collaborate with Industrial Design, Operations, and Reliability teams.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree(s) in Chemical Engineering / Materials Science / Mechanical Engineering.
  • 3+ years work experience in wet coatings (inks, photoresists, etc.).
  • Strong analytical/problem solving skills and ability to use statistical tools and techniques.
  • Technical project management experience leading a project from R&D to production.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and social skills.
  • Flexibility and comfort working in a quickly changing environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Technical knowledge of pigments, dyes, resins, and other precursor materials.
  • Familiarity with color analysis and color modeling (reflectance curves, visual assessment of color).
  • Experience working remotely with vendors.
  • Experience working on multiple products/coatings on different development timelines.
  • Experience with thin film coating systems for glass and plastics.
  • Experience with high-quality cosmetic parts and finishes in high volume.
  • Track record of material selection and development for products with demanding performance requirements.
