About The Position

Mfinite Consulting is seeking a highly analytical Senior Cost Accountant to support the financial operations, budgeting, and cost management activities for the Maryland Department of State Police (MDSP). This role is responsible for analyzing operational costs, preparing detailed financial reports, supporting budgeting processes, and ensuring compliance with state accounting standards. The Senior Cost Accountant will provide financial insights that guide decision-making, monitor expenditures, and assist with audits and forecasting initiatives.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in cost accounting, financial analysis, or related financial roles.
Strong experience in financial reporting, variance analysis, and cost tracking.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formulas, pivot tables, and financial modeling.
Experience with financial systems and accounting software.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills to prepare reports and present findings.

Nice To Haves

Experience in government or public sector accounting, preferably with state agencies.
CPA designation or CPA-track candidate.
Familiarity with state accounting systems and compliance requirements.
Experience in budget forecasting, grant accounting, or program cost analysis.
Ability to provide actionable financial insights to support strategic decision-making.

Responsibilities

Analyze operational costs across departments and programs, identifying trends, inefficiencies, and opportunities for cost savings.
Develop and maintain cost allocation models to accurately assign expenses to programs, projects, or cost centers.
Prepare detailed financial reports, including variance analyses, cost summaries, and budget-to-actual comparisons.
Assist with annual budget preparation, monitoring, and adjustments, ensuring alignment with organizational and state guidelines.
Conduct financial forecasting, scenario analysis, and cost projections to support strategic planning.
Ensure compliance with the State of Maryland accounting procedures, policies, and regulatory requirements.
Support internal and external audits by providing documentation, explanations, and reconciliations for financial transactions.
Maintain and reconcile accounting records, ensuring accuracy and completeness of financial data.
Collaborate with finance, operations, and program teams to ensure accurate reporting and effective cost management.
Identify and recommend improvements to financial processes, systems, and reporting tools.
