Position Summary Crude Oil Trading is part of Supply Trading & Origination oirganization, a cross-functional organization that purchases/sells, plans, transports, and accounts for crude oil and other refinery feedstocks. Crude Oil Trading has personnel located in the United States, Canada, Singapore, and the UK. Crude Oil Traders interface externally to negotiate pricing and terms for the purchase and sale of Crude Oil as dictated by refinery economics, market conditions, and logistics to maximize economic margin consistent with safe refinery supply chain operations and other MPC core values. This trading position is for a highly motivated individual that has a strong aptitude and a keen interest for a commercial career. This role will provide an opportunity for the successful candidate to gain an understanding of the crude oil supply business, while performing a complex and critical function.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, marketing, economics, accounting, or related field of study
  • 5 or more years of experience in a commercial role, trading or marketing including profit/loss responsibility for crude trading, contract negotiation, and scheduling (rail, truck, and pipe)

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements negotiating tactics and arranging the purchase and sale of crude oil as dictated by refinery economics, market conditions and logistical requirements.
  • Interacting with Traders, Schedulers, Refinery Feedstock Coordinators, Accountants, Engineers, Analysts, Legal and other personnel in Commercial, Refining, Marketing, Product Quality, Transport & Logistics, Business Development, IT and Finance & Commercial Services and elsewhere. These interactions will be required to stay abreast of trading, logistical and financial activity, prepare contracts, address information queries, initiate, recommend, develop, and implement existing and new acquisition or sales strategies for achieving optimum value added from crude oil purchases, sales, and logistics.
  • Evaluates and executes discretionary trade and business development opportunities beyond the core business (storage, blending, freight deals).
  • Manages basis commodity exposure and/or physical inventory position to maximize market structure value within operational constraints in collaboration with Refining, Scheduling, and Finance groups within assigned area.
  • Representing the Company at industry functions and keeping abreast of evolving industry conditions by training, reading, building, and maintaining internal and external contacts related to crude oil trading.
  • This dynamic trading role will support MPC’s Domestic Crude book, specifically regarding trading of physical and financial instruments native to the Houston area, and encompassing supply of feedstocks to the Galveston Bay Refinery. This role will have significant daily interactions with the Permian, Canadian, Cushing, and Louisiana traders, and play a crucial role in strategy development and execution for each of these regions.
