About The Position

Our client, a highly respected A-rated P&C Insurance Company, is seeking an experienced Senior Data Engineer (Azure) to join their growing IT department. This is a unique opportunity to spearhead data engineering initiatives and lead a team responsible for building and optimizing scalable data pipelines and architectures. The ideal candidate will bring a blend of technical depth, strategic thinking, and leadership experience to drive the company's data strategy forward. This role offers the flexibility to work remotely but candidate MUST reside in New Jersey or New York.

Requirements

  • 5 - 10+ years of hands-on experience in data engineering with advanced proficiency in SQL, Python, and big data tools (e.g., Spark, Databricks).
  • Proven experience designing and managing ETL/ELT processes and pipelines in Azure or other cloud environments.
  • Strong foundation in application architecture and system design, with the ability to evaluate, structure, and scale solutions effectively.
  • Hands-on experience applying established design patterns to implement business logic within middle-tier services, leveraging web services and modern architectural principles as appropriate.
  • Experience building and supporting cloud-native solutions using Microsoft Azure, with exposure to services such as App Services, Azure Functions, AKS, Azure DevOps, Azure SQL, and related platform or infrastructure components.
  • Solid programming experience with C# and SQL, including hands-on work with SQL Server environments and associated tooling.
  • Demonstrated capability in designing, developing, and maintaining REST-based backend services, with familiarity in multi-layered API architectures that separate process and experience concerns.
  • Strong background in automated testing practices, including writing unit tests with dependency injection and mocking frameworks, as well as contributing to integration and regression testing strategies.
  • Practical knowledge of DevOps concepts, including CI/CD automation, pipeline configuration, and experience working within Agile delivery models.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field from an accredited U.S. institution.

Nice To Haves

  • Microsoft Azure Data Engineering certification is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Drive cloud-based data solutions using platforms such as Microsoft Azure (e.g., Data Factory, Synapse Analytics, Databricks).
  • Actively design, build, and deploy application solutions by writing, testing, and maintaining code across the full stack or within low-code/no-code platforms as appropriate.
  • Work directly with stakeholders and technical partners to gather requirements and turn them into practical, scalable technical solutions.
  • Implement and refine application architectures, contributing code and configurations that improve performance, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Develop and execute automated unit and integration tests, and contribute directly to regression testing efforts to ensure high-quality releases.
  • Perform detailed code reviews, provide technical feedback, and apply best practices to improve overall code quality.
  • Collaborate daily with engineers, QA, automation specialists, analysts, and project managers to deliver features and enhancements on schedule.
  • Engage directly with external vendors and contract resources, supporting implementation efforts and ensuring alignment with technical standards.
