About The Position

The University of Virginia’s Facilities Management (FM) is seeking a Senior Electrician to join the Building Automation Services (BAS) group. BAS supports the University’s academic, research, and healthcare missions by maintaining reliable, efficient, and environmentally responsible building operations. The BAS Senior Electrician plays a key role in supporting the University’s automation and energy management infrastructure. The incumbent is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and control systems, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation of building automation equipment across Academic and Health System facilities. This position requires strong electrical expertise, proficiency with low-voltage and control wiring, and a commitment to safety and customer service. Unlike traditional electrical positions, the BAS Senior Electrician role offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of electrical systems and smart building technology. You will gain hands-on experience with building automation, controls, and energy management systems while supporting mission-critical research and healthcare facilities at UVA. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least seven years of experience in the electrical trade; experience with low-voltage and control wiring is strongly preferred.
  • Journeyman or higher electrical license and a valid driver’s license required.
  • Selected candidates must successfully complete all required background checks prior to the first day of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical equipment, wiring, and control devices that support BAS and energy management systems.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and troubleshooting on BAS-related electrical systems, including sensors, actuators, panels, and networked devices.
  • Specify and install electrical and control wiring in compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Lay out and prepare areas for the installation of conduits, junction boxes, control wiring, and power feeds for BAS equipment.
  • Collaborate with BAS technicians, controls engineers, and HVAC staff to ensure proper integration of automation systems with electrical infrastructure.
  • Communicate job status, delays, and estimated completion timelines to project managers or supervisor when appropriate.
  • Perform all work in accordance with OSHA, NEC, federal, state, and local regulations, as well as University and Joint Commission requirements.
  • Assist other trades as needed and develop familiarity with diverse building systems.
  • Support University operations by performing additional duties such as snow and ice removal and special event setup.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Support workforce development by coaching technicians and apprentices in electrical systems, codes, and field practices.
