About The Position

IMEG is hiring a Senior Fire Protection Engineer to support moderate to complex building projects across multiple U.S. locations, including Des Moines, IA; Louisville, KY; Philadelphia, PA; Portland, OR; Raleigh, NC; Rochester, NY; Seattle, WA; and Richmond, VA. In this role, you will lead fire protection design efforts, provide project direction, develop engineering solutions, and oversee implementation for a variety of building systems. You will also collaborate with engineers, consultants, and clients, while supporting project budgets, mentoring team members, and helping drive successful project outcomes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent, required
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License in Fire Protection Engineering required
  • 7 years of experience minimum required, or equivalent, required
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License in Fire Protection Engineering required
  • 7 years of experience minimum required, 8 preferred, in the building design consulting industry
  • Advanced proficiency in design techniques, tools, and concepts involved in the production of technical plans and specifications
  • Advanced proficiency in technical and analytical skills including proficiency in principles of thermodynamics, fire dynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics as it relates to fire protection systems design in fire alarm, fire suppression, and smoke control systems for buildings
  • Strong training, mentoring and leadership skills
  • Proficiency of industry standard engineering software and tools including fire dynamics simulation, hydraulic simulation, and intelligibility software
  • Ability to perform final quality control check in their area of expertise
  • Ability to sell work and develop client relationships
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups

Responsibilities

  • Lead design efforts for fire alarm, fire suppression, and smoke control systems for building projects
  • Develop detailed designs, specifications, and calculations in accordance with applicable codes and IMEG standards
  • Perform site assessments and produce technical analyses and reports
  • Partner with clients to gather requirements, communicate technical information, and maintain strong client relationships
  • Conduct in-process design reviews and apply IMEG quality control processes to confirm accuracy and completeness
  • Provide technical training/mentoring and assist with resolution of field issues (with limited support from senior staff)
  • Stay current on industry trends and contribute to research, development, and innovation efforts within IMEG
  • Prioritize safety and identify/mitigate potential risks associated with fire protection system designs
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (engineering, architecture, and project management) to deliver integrated solutions
  • Participate in project interviews and project presentations

  • The team designs automatic sprinkler systems, clean agent and specialty suppression, fire pump installations, standpipes, and fire alarm/detection systems in coordination with other disciplines.
  • Fire protection designs are developed to meet National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and local building codes and tailored to each facility’s hazards and usage.
  • The team coordinates closely with architects and other disciplines so fire safety features (including fire-rated assemblies and egress requirements) are integrated into the overall design.
  • Tools used include specialized fire suppression design software (for hydraulic and fire modeling) integrated with BIM and adherence to fire codes and standards (e.g., NFPA guidelines, IBC) to ensure compliant designs.
