The Senior Hardware Engineer is the hardware lead who is responsible for the selection, integration, testing and verification of the hardware subsystems required to enable a multi-component oligonucleotide synthesis platform to help transform IDT’s capabilities. This position reports to the Senior Manager and is part of the Emerging Technologies team located in Sunnyvale, CA and will be an on-site role. In this role, you will have the opportunity to: Influence system-level architecture and design decisions for a synthesis platform, helping shape the evolution from prototype to manufacturable system. Lead the end-to-end hardware development lifecycle, from component selection and schematic/layout review through prototyping, validation and verification, and production readiness. Own and drive hardware risk management activities, including FMEA, Safety Risk Assessments, and implementation of engineering controls for safe operation. Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical, fluidics, systems, mechanical and software/firmware engineers as well as synthesis chemists and other technical disciplines to deliver an integrated, automation-ready platform.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field, with 5+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in hardware component selection, development, integration and testing of complex instrumentation.
  • Extensive hands-on experience performing FMEA, safety risk assessments, and hazard mitigation for hardware involving the use of hazardous materials.
  • Prior work on lab automation or automated liquid handling systems, including pumps, valves, sensors, actuators, and control electronics.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory and compliance requirements, including RoHS.
  • Ability to travel 5% time domestically.
  • Ability to occasionally lift, move or carry equipment up to 20 lbs.
  • Ability to frequently work in a laboratory environment for extended periods.

Nice To Haves

  • UL or EU certification, including coordination with regulatory entities.
  • Working within ISO-aligned quality systems (e.g., design controls, change management, and risk documentation).
  • Integrating hardware with embedded firmware or industrial control systems used in automated platforms.
