Works as part of an integrated design team, interacting with other design disciplines to specify and select instruments, final control elements, and control systems for reactor plants (both nuclear and non-nuclear components) and fuel cycle facilities. Creates and maintains instrumentation documentation including calculations, drawings, specifications, calibration procedures and maintenance plans. May develop and implement software for control systems or prepare software specifications to guide development by others. Supports installation and construction by developing control system validation/testing protocols. Ensures plant instrumentation complies with nuclear safety requirements, and health, safety and environmental regulations. Provides technical support and training to staff on instruments and control systems. Plans, schedules, conducts or coordinates detailed phases of the Instrumentation/Control work in a part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope. Depending on experience and qualifications, may be responsible for defining the scope of the project, with full responsibility for interpreting, organizing, and executing project assignments. Performs engineering design. Prepares or oversees the preparation of preliminary and final design products, submitting them for approval. Coordinates work with other engineers and professionals within and outside own discipline, and with support services staff. Guides, mentors, and reviews work of more junior engineers, designers and technicians. Depending on experience and qualifications, may conduct quality control checks, reviewing calculations, designs, evaluations, and specifications developed by junior engineers and designers. Performs work that involves conventional engineering practice but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials or procedures, or difficult coordination requirements. Depending on experience and qualifications, may carry out complex or novel assignments requiring diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments. This level of work may require the use of advanced techniques and the modification and extension of theories, precepts, and practices. Performs other duties as assigned.
