About The Position

As the Senior Manager, External Communications, you are a key driver of our consumer-facing media presence and the tactical force behind our brand storytelling. Reporting to the Senior Director of External Communications, you will focus on the end-to-end execution of large-scale consumer campaigns, brand milestones, and product launches. This role balances strategic implementation with a passion for proactive pitching to ensure Sam’s Club remains a fixture in the national retail and consumer conversation. You will partner with cross-functional teams to unearth the best stories, turning them into high-impact earned media moments while using data-driven insights to measure effectiveness and shape future efforts. Requirements

  • 5–7 years of experience in media relations or communications, with a track record of driving national earned media for large, complex brands.
  • Strong executive presence with the ability to serve as a trusted partner to internal stakeholders, providing clear perspective and confident communication in a matrixed environment.
  • A strategic mindset with the ability to translate complex business topics into clear, compelling consumer storytelling.
  • Exceptional writing skills with experience in messaging frameworks and creating content that resonates with media.
  • Strong judgment, comfort navigating ambiguity, and the ability to drive decisions in fast-moving environments.
  • A relationship-first approach that builds trust across a matrixed organization.
  • A passion for understanding the business and using data to shape and improve meaningful stories.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, or related field and 4 years’ experience in corporate communications, public relations, or relevant area OR 6 years’ experience in corporate communications, public relations, or relevant area.
  • 1 year’s supervisory experience or experience leading cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Execute Media Campaigns: Translate the overarching communications vision into actionable plans that secure consistent, high-quality consumer media coverage.
  • Drive Earned Media: Lead proactive pitching efforts by cultivating strong relationships with national, lifestyle, retail, and trade reporters.
  • Coordinate Launches: Partner with cross-functional teams to identify strong stories and support product launches that showcase Sam’s Club’s innovation.
  • Brand Storytelling: Build breakthrough moments including brand milestones, Member’s Mark storytelling, and consumer-focused corporate reputation campaigns.
  • Measure and Optimize: Utilize measurement tools and data to determine the effectiveness of consumer campaigns and use those insights to influence and refine future communication strategies.
  • Protect the Voice: Develop and protect the company’s external voice, helping to manage reputation risks and ensuring consistent messaging across consumer platforms.
  • Content Development: Support the narrative by drafting clear, compelling materials such as pitches, messaging frameworks, and media assets.

  • The annual salary range for this position is $90,000.00 - $180,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses.
