This role will be responsible for developing and executing strategies across the External Manufacturing & Electronic Systems category and delivering innovation, resilience, cost optimization through our supply base supporting Surgery, EPNV & Vision business units. Success in this role requires a customer-centric mindset, ensuring that internal business units—including R&D, Operations, Quality, and Marketing—are engaged as key customers. By understanding their priorities and translating them into procurement strategies, the leader will position EM&S Category Procurement as a trusted partner that enables product innovation, compliance, and commercial success. The scope of the Senior Manager- EM&S Category MedTech will include:

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering, Supply Chain, Operations or related field.
  • 10 Years of Related Experience Required
  • Strategic Leadership – ability to set vision and direction for category managers.
  • Talent Development – proven experience in building high-performing teams.
  • Business Acumen – strong financial, operational, and supply chain expertise.
  • Stakeholder Engagement – ability to partner and influence across R&D, Ops, and commercial functions.

Nice To Haves

  • Masters or MBA Preferred
  • Prior Category Management experience in External Manufacturing and Electronic Systems.
  • Working knowledge and experience in Sourcing Processes, Contracting, Negotiations
  • Strong knowledge of materials, technologies, and supply markets, ideally within medical devices, pharma, or life sciences
  • Familiarity with regulatory and quality standards in healthcare (ISO, FDA, MDR, UDI, serialization, etc.).
  • 5 years management experience.
  • APICS / ISM/ CPSM Certification
  • Travel: Up to 10-15% (Domestic/International)

Responsibilities

  • Lead the External Manufacturing & Electronic Systems Category and Supplier Relationship Management to develop E2E business category strategy and execution, supplier management and risk mitigation across Surgery, EPNV & Vision business units in MedTech.
  • Reporting into the MedTech Center Category Management Leader, the role will provide overall coordination, facilitation and enablement of programs that will drive best practices and leverage across J&J Enterprise.
  • Set clear goals, priorities, and performance measures to ensure alignment with business objectives while fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and innovation within the team.
  • Responsible for providing a practical and intellectual understanding of the global MedTech industry and its channels in order to provide a strong combination of strategic vision and hands-on leadership in all aspects of global sourcing operations.
  • Provide oversight and direction for global EM&S category strategies.
  • Ensure alignment across sub-categories and business units to capture synergies and scale benefits.
  • Drive portfolio-level decisions (make/buy, supplier footprint, risk diversification, sustainability, simplification & rationalization).
  • Oversee category pipeline execution to deliver cost savings, resilience, and innovation.
  • Be responsible for managing all aspects of the relationship within EM&S Material suppliers to deliver reliable product supply and total cost reduction.
  • Develop a supplier strategy that segments suppliers, assesses and governs performance, rationalizes the supply base, and drives continuous improvement.
  • Monitor supplier contract maintenance and negotiations, ensuring alignment with current business requirements
  • Guide the cross functional team in supplier segmentation and relationship management, ensuring strategic partnerships and performance excellence.
  • Act as executive sponsor for key supplier relationships, enabling innovation and executive-level engagement.
  • Monitor global EM&S market trends, cost drivers, and index-based pricing models to inform sourcing strategies.
  • Monitoring and benchmark existing supply base within the global marketplace.
  • Foster a customer-first culture within the team, positioning procurement as a trusted advisor and value-adding partner.
  • Represent EM&S Procurement with senior stakeholders in R&D, Operations, Regulatory, and Quality.
  • Ensure the supplier support for regulatory compliance (FDA, MDR, UDI, serialization) and patient safety standards.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to develop and deploy local strategies that align with Category objectives and that impact cost, quality, service, SEI, Supplier Diversity, SRM and supplier consolidation activities and metrics.
  • Deliver on financial targets including savings, cost avoidance, cash flow and value creation (short, mid and long term).
  • Establish and track KPIs across quality, service, risk, sustainability, and innovation.
  • Support enterprise-wide initiatives such as digital procurement, supplier diversity, and ESG commitments.
  • Provide oversight and direction for secondary packaging strategies; ensure alignment across sub-categories and business units; drive portfolio-level decisions (make/buy, supplier footprint, risk diversification, sustainability).
  • Act as procurement’s voice with business units (R&D, Operations, Quality, Marketing), ensuring their needs are understood and reflected in category strategies; position procurement as a trusted partner.
  • Guide supplier segmentation and performance management; act as executive sponsor for key supplier relationships; monitor global packaging trends and cost drivers.
  • Drive savings, cost avoidance, risk mitigation, and sustainability outcomes; establish and track KPIs across cost, quality, service, and innovation.
  • Partner with cross-functional leaders to enable compliant, patient-centric, and sustainable packaging solutions; support regulatory and quality requirements.
  • Promote adoption of next-generation and emerging digital technologies; champion digital tools to enhance procurement effectiveness.
