Learn more at https://www.jnj.com/medtech Job Description The Staff IMM Engineer performs a variety of plastic injection molding process and mechanical assignments utilizing both process and mechanical engineering fundamentals. Works at an advanced technical expertise level involving planning, development, assessing machine performance, and strategy to improve productivity. Responsible for developing preventative maintenance strategy based on assessment data to assure high quality products and IMM reliability. Takes a leading position in activities involved with sub-contractors/vendors from beginning of design process through installation and start-up processes. Acts as advocate for continuous improvement of technology and processes. Takes leading role in front-line Injection Molding support i.e., breakdown repairs, preventative maintenance, training programs, etc. Adheres to safety and environmental policy and procedures supporting Engineering department objectives.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and/or University degree is required; focused degree in Engineering preferred. An advanced degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of relevant professional work experience: Ten (10) plus years preferred, on hands‑on injection molding experience with in regulated medical device with high volume production automated molding cells.
  • Relevant work experience in injection molding process/equipment development, project management, installation, qualification and maintenance.
  • Proven experience with process validation (IQ/OQ/PQ), design controls, and working knowledge of ISO 13485 and 21 CFR 820 / FDA QSR.
  • Experience integrating molding machines and downstream high speed automation take-out robots, six axis robots, vision systems, and conveyors.
  • Thorough knowledge and complete understanding and application of principles, concepts and practices of manufacturing engineering
  • Thorough knowledge of plastic processing & molding technology
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required
  • Excellent organizational skills required
  • Electrical, pneumatic schematic, and PLC ladder diagram understanding and interpretation
  • Thorough knowledge of government regulatory requirements
  • Experience working in FDA environment

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Netstal, SumitomoFanuc, Engel Injection Molding Machines is highly preferred
  • Knowledge of Yushin, Mitsubishi, Epson and Denso robots and transfer systems is highly preferred
  • Track record of delivering capital projects for molding automation, including ROI justification and project commissioning.
  • Deep technical expertise in scientific injection molding process development, DOEs, mold filling, packing, cooling, hot runner systems, multi‑cavity balancing, and mold functionality.
  • Knowledge in Scientific Molding, Statistical Analysis, DMAIC Problem Solving and Lean tools is highly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Plans, conducts and directs injection molding/equipment assignments for production support in areas of process capability, uptime, cycle time, yield and overall cost reduction.
  • Takes lead role in troubleshooting / resolving equipment, systems, processes to optimize IMM performance to prevent product nonconformance.
  • Prepares equipment, process, safety, and components specifications and conducts technical analysis of vendor proposals.
  • Qualifies new equipment and performs vendor and site acceptance testing to meet project objectives.
  • Provides training to engineers and technicians to operate, troubleshoot and maintain new and current equipment.
  • Drive OEE, cycle time reduction, and cost reduction projects through equipment improvement, process improvements, innovation, and preventive maintenance strategies.
  • Manage capital project definitions and technical specifications for new molding machines, automation equipment, peripherals equipment, support procurement and installation oversight.
  • Develop, qualify, and optimize injection molding processes (material trials, mold design input, machine parameters, cycle times) to meet product and regulatory requirements.
  • Own process validation activities (IQ/OQ/PQ, installation and process qualifications) and maintain documentation in accordance with QMS, ISO 13485, and 21 CFR 820/ FDA QSR requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
