About The Position

What We Can Achieve Together: The Senior Philanthropy Consultant serves as a member of the Philanthropy Consulting team of Global Development, reports into the Director of Philanthropy Consulting, and is the point person running a team of external consultants. The Senior Philanthropy Consultant will lead the management and growth of a bench of external consultants to deliver consulting services to internal philanthropy teams with an improved ability to meet TNC’s ambitious campaign goals. The services would include, but not be limited to, campaign planning and feasibility studies, internal assessments, case development, donor and volunteer engagement, pipeline development, strategic fundraising counsel, and campaign management. They would also be responsible for developing and ensuring the methodology, tools, and resources needed are comprehensive and consistent with TNC’s fundraising approach, in addition to training and coaching the external consultants in their use. The Senior Philanthropy Consultant will maintain expert knowledge of the systems and resources managed by the team; apply this knowledge to coordinate organizational support and plan communications related to these resources; and stay up to date on market trends and best practices to improve services. They will analyze situations, evaluate alternatives, and implement solutions to improve effectiveness. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 8 years related experience, including 3 years as a consultant to a fundraising program. (Please do not apply without experience working as a fundraising consultant.)
  • End-to-end fundraising campaign experience. (Please do not apply without this as planning through reporting on campaign results is a requirement.)
  • Experience analyzing program results.
  • Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising program constituents.
  • Program management and experience managing cross-functional projects.
  • People or vendor or contractor management.
  • Good written communication skills.
  • Experience working across complex organizations.
  • Experience, coursework, or other training in current trends in relevant field.
  • Ability to make strategic decisions based on analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment.
  • Ability to train on and direct complex processes and procedures.
  • Ability to work in partnership with others in a collaborative or advisory role, including senior staff.

Responsibilities

  • Decisions may have program-wide impact, affect staff in non-program areas, and bind the organization financially or legally.
  • Design and lead collaborative, complex, and diversified projects, coordinating the work of other professionals, managing a budget, and ensuring accountability.
  • Direct or participate in negotiations for complex, high-profile or sensitive agreements.
  • Field inquiries from prospective clients to understand and match their needs with the services offered.
  • Ensure compliance with TNC policies and procedures and external requirements (donor/legal/IRS); be alert to ethical compliance issues.
  • Define the scope of services for prospective clients, including project schedules, project team members and project deliverables.
  • Facilitate strategic dialogues with senior-level stakeholders, articulating a development vision, synthesize and vet a plan of action, identify key issues, develop potential solutions, and implement plans to deliver targeted outcomes.
  • Financial responsibility includes working within a budget and negotiating and contracting with vendors.
  • Maintain confidentiality of frequently sensitive and emotionally charged information.
  • Manage and implement strategic initiatives with broad impact by collaborating with key stakeholders to enhance overall performance in accordance with short and long-term objectives.
  • Act independently, resolving complex issues within scope.
  • Serve as project advisor, supporting project leads, coordinating work of project support staff, and troubleshooting issues as they arise, to ensure consulting projects are on schedule and that deliverables are met.
  • Mobilize and coordinate resources needed beyond the consulting team, essential to meeting client deliverables, such as but not limited to data analysis, graphic design, and proofreading/editing
  • Travel frequently and on short notice, and work long hours and weekends.
  • Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.
  • Work proactively towards implementing organizational and departmental strategic goals.
