About the position

Amazon Web Services (AWS) Hardware Engineering team creates compute and storage server designs for Amazon’s innovative web services. The storage platform team develops and operates all the platforms for our major storage products (S3, EBS & EC2). Our designs are industry-leading in performance, frugality and operational excellence, and are critical to the success of the AWS business and the more than one million customers who use AWS today. Our success depends on our highly respected storage infrastructure; we’re handling massive scale and rapid integration of emergent technologies. The ideal candidate for this role will be an innovative, hands-on leader, seasoned in building and leading software teams developing large-scale telemetry and real-time monitoring systems with demonstrated experience at building solutions using AWS public cloud services. As a Sr. SDE in this team, you will be leading a team of highly motivated software developers that thrive on solving challenging problems with innovative solutions. The team couples software and firmware skill-sets with storage and scalable software engineering disciplines to solve real world data storage problems. You would lead a team building, validating, and operating software solutions in diverse technology domains from embedded software platforms to large-scale distributed software systems in Java, C/C++, Python, and other languages using proprietary and open source technologies and Amazon services alike. Prior experience in large-scale distributed system development and monitoring is a plus. You will collaborate with internal and external development teams (architecture, hardware, validation, software services). You will establish strategic vision and drive tactical execution in defining and delivering new products and services. You are highly organized, data-driven, have a passion for recruiting, leading and developing world-class engineering talent, and executing projects on defined timelines. Responsibilities

  • Work backward from customer input to build and drive product roadmap
  • Drive software development for the team, leading design reviews, driving code-reviews, delivering bar-raising software
  • Innovate on architecture and drive feature design details, looking to invent and simplify and raise the bar on resilience and scalability
  • Drive operational excellence and build operational excellence into product development practices
  • Mentor and grow the organization to deliver the product roadmap

Requirements

  • 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • 5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience
  • 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent

Nice-to-haves

  • 7+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
  • 3+ years of demonstrated experience for development with AWS services including CloudWatch, Kinesis, DynamoDB
  • 3+ years of experience building and operating distributed systems
  • 3+ years of experience with telemetry, observability and monitoring of cloud services
