About The Position

The PRS of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is the United States Air Force's (USAF) focal point for directed energy and space and missile related research and technology. PRS is comprised of two technical directorates of the AFRL: Space Vehicles Directorate (RV) and Directed Energy Directorate (RD). The PRS Chief Information Officer (CIO) provides information technology support for these two directorates. This includes operation of a widespread and heterogeneous computing environment to include Windows/Unix/Linux servers; Windows based personal computers of various manufacture, and Windows and UNIX/Linux-based workstations connected by a Local Area Network (LAN), USAF mobile devices such as laptops, tablets and iOS devices. The PRS CIO is responsible for providing computing resources, information technology, web-based applications development, integration, and support services to the RV and RD Directorates. The objective of this requirement is to provide comprehensive information technology services. Included in this objective is the integration and maintenance of PRS communications/computer systems in compliance with defense information infrastructure instructions, standards, and architectures. Requirements

  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DoD 8570/8140 IAT Level II certification (Security+ CE or equivalent).
  • 5+ years of experience in enterprise virtualization or systems engineering roles.
  • Hands-on experience building and managing multi-host VMware ESXi clusters in production environments.
  • Strong experience with: VMware vSphere (7.x or newer), vCenter administration, vSAN configuration and management, VMware Horizon VDI
  • Experience participating in cluster design and expansion, not solely administering prebuilt environments.
  • Solid Windows Server administration experience including: Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy
  • Experience supporting Linux server environments.
  • Experience performing lifecycle management (patching, upgrades, version transitions) in production systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across compute, storage, and networking layers.

Nice To Haves

  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP-DCV) or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience supporting or contributing to VMware Cloud Foundation environments.
  • Familiarity with SDDC Manager concepts and NSX-T integration.
  • Experience designing or optimizing vSAN storage architectures.
  • Experience with PowerCLI, scripting, or automation.
  • Experience supporting classified DoD networks.
  • Experience with GPU-enabled VDI environments.
  • A hands-on virtualization engineer with experience in production environments.

Responsibilities

  • Virtualization Engineering & Operations
  • Participate in the engineering, deployment, and sustainment of VMware ESXi clusters.
  • Collaborate with the Virtualization Team to design and implement new cluster builds as capacity or mission requirements evolve.
  • Configure and maintain vCenter, HA, DRS, resource pools, and cluster policies.
  • Perform host lifecycle management including patching, upgrades, and firmware coordination.
  • Monitor system health, performance, and capacity; proactively address operational issues.
  • Contribute to platform optimization initiatives based on operational trends and performance analysis.
  • VMware Platform Integration (VCF-Aligned)
  • Support and contribute to VMware platform operations aligned with VMware Cloud Foundation architecture.
  • Participate in lifecycle activities involving integrated compute, storage, and networking layers.
  • Evaluate operational patterns and recommend architectural improvements consistent with modern VMware platform design practices.
  • Collaborate with enterprise teams to maintain platform scalability and integration.
  • vSAN & Storage Architecture
  • Design and implement vSAN storage configurations aligned to workload needs.
  • Develop and manage storage policies (performance, redundancy, encryption).
  • Coordinate with SAN/NAS infrastructure where applicable.
  • Maintain storage stability, resiliency, and performance as primary objectives.
  • VDI Engineering & Sustainment
  • Design, deploy, and maintain VMware Horizon environments.
  • Build and manage desktop pools and associated infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot authentication, profile, and performance issues.
  • Support secure remote access configurations (e.g., UAG) in coordination with cybersecurity and networking teams.
  • Optimize VDI performance for mission users.
  • Windows Server Administration (Operational Focus)
  • Administer Windows Server infrastructure supporting virtual workloads.
  • Manage Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy.
  • Support smartcard/CAC authentication integration.
  • Perform patching, vulnerability remediation, and STIG hardening.
  • Support core infrastructure services and clustering as required.
  • Security, Compliance & Documentation
  • Support RMF/ATO documentation and sustainment activities.
  • Implement and validate STIGs and vulnerability remediation efforts.
  • Develop and maintain engineering artifacts including architecture diagrams, configuration baselines, and implementation documentation.
  • Participate in configuration management and change control processes.
  • Operational Support & Collaboration
  • Provide Tier III escalation support for virtualization-related issues.
  • Coordinate maintenance windows with stakeholders to minimize mission impact.
  • Support backup validation, disaster recovery exercises, and continuity planning efforts.
  • Collaborate with enterprise teams to ensure interoperability and compliance across supported environments.
