About The Position

Enhances public safety of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia and Department of Corrections staff and inmates, by meeting re-entry objectives and by providing effective security services, programming, custody, and control of adult inmates in a major correctional facility. Position assists the Institutional Training Officer in planning, organizing, coordinating, and in the implementation and delivery of all training programs for employees as mandated by the Department of Criminal Justice Services, American Correctional Association, and Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC). Communicates with management, staff, visitors, inmates, and the public. Leads and counsel’s staff. Completes required training. Maintains a safe and productive workforce. Provides first line supervision to Corrections Officers and Corrections Officer Trainees in an institutional setting. Supervises and monitors staff on assigned shift to ensure a safe and secure environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Certification.
  • Successful completion of mandated training for Correctional Officers and all other mandated training.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of correctional policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, plan, schedule and supervise the work of others.
  • Working knowledge in the use of security equipment including firearms, radio equipment, physical control devices, electric and electronic controls.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures and to prepare workplace reports and documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to sufficiently receive, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced knowledge or equivalent applicable experience and training.
  • Current DCJS General Instructor Certification in at least one of the following areas: Firearms, First Aid/CPR, and Defensive Tactics Certification.
  • Knowledge of adult training methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce written reports using a computer.
  • Experience delivering training in criminal justice, corrections, or law enforcement environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgement in carrying out group’s tasks within established guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to present class materials to groups in a training setting.
