About The Position

The Sheet Metal Technician III is a highly skilled, experienced craftsperson with mastery-level knowledge of dry-side HVAC systems, commercial sheet metal fabrication, installation, and repair. This senior-level role works independently or as a lead on complex projects, performing advanced fabrication, assembly, installation, equipment startups, and system checkouts while upholding the highest standards of safety, quality, and professionalism. The Technician III mentors junior team members, ensures accurate documentation, and contributes to efficient, profitable project delivery in commercial and institutional mechanical environments.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5+ years of progressive experience in commercial sheet metal fabrication, installation, and HVAC systems.
  • Current journeyman sheet metal license or ability to obtain relevant certification/licensure.
  • Proven ability to read blueprints, perform layouts, and handle complex installations independently.
  • OSHA 10 certification (or higher) or equivalent safety training; commitment to ongoing safety education.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test, background check, and any required physical/safety assessments.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience on government, healthcare, educational, or large-scale commercial projects.
  • Familiarity with additional tools/software (e.g., BIM coordination, fabrication software, or digital layout tools).
  • Prior experience leading small crews or mentoring apprentices in a field setting.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate in-depth expertise in dry-side commercial HVAC applications, including system design principles, layout, and advanced fabrication techniques.
  • Fabricate, assemble, install, modify, and repair a wide range of HVAC-related sheet metal products, ductwork, equipment, and components to precise specifications.
  • Perform equipment startups, functional testing, system checkouts, and troubleshooting with minimal supervision.
  • Read and interpret complex blueprints, specifications, shop drawings, and as-built plans to accurately layout, measure, cut, and install materials.
  • Work independently on challenging tasks, resolve complex issues, and make sound decisions in the field to maintain project timelines and quality.
  • Document all work performed by completing daily logs, time sheets, material requisitions, safety reports, and other required paperwork accurately and promptly.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and on-the-job mentoring to junior technicians and apprentices to build team capability and promote best practices.
  • May serve as a lead technician or first-level supervisor on assigned crews or projects, coordinating tasks and ensuring safe, efficient execution.
  • Maintain and promote a high standard of safety at all times; comply with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and job-site requirements; participate in safety meetings and mentor others on safe practices.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, and team members—both verbally and in writing—to report progress, resolve issues, and maintain positive relationships.
  • Multi-task efficiently, follow up on commitments, and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • Demonstrate self-motivation, high energy, physical stamina, and the ability to perform physically demanding tasks (standing for extended periods, lifting/moving heavy materials, loading/unloading vehicles, digging/refilling trenches, etc.).
