About The Position

SHELTER RELIEF WORKER West Warwick Shelter Per Diem/On-Call – Non-Exempt Thrive Behavioral Health, the Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic for Kent County, has been delivering mental health and substance use services since 1976. Our programs include: Adult Mental Health, Youth and Family, Substance Use, Housing, Teen and Young Adult, Court Ordered, and Crisis Behavioral Health. With more than a dozen locations across Rhode Island and more than 300 employees, Thrive is continuing to grow and meet the needs of the community. General Summary: The Shelter Relief Staff provides essential coverage during staff absences, peak periods, and emergencies. This role supports the daily operations of the shelter by ensuring a safe, clean, and supportive environment for clients and/or animals while upholding organizational policies and standards of care. Schedule: Varies with need, includes 3 rd shift Salary: $30 per hour Location: Warwick, RI

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to changing priorities
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Compassionate, reliable, and team-oriented approach
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Valid driver's license and automobile insurance which meets Rhode Island minimum standards required, or the ability to obtain necessary transportation in order to perform the responsibilities/tasks of the job.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in a shelter, nonprofit, caregiving, or customer service role preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct care and support to shelter occupants
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of shelter facilities, including common areas and sleeping spaces
  • Monitor shelter safety and security; follow established protocols and report concerns promptly
  • Assist with signing in and out procedures, putting out provided meals, cleaning, and routine care tasks
  • Interact with clients, visitors, and staff in a respectful, compassionate, and professional manner
  • Support emergency procedures and respond calmly to crisis situations
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure smooth shelter operations
  • Remain awake and alert during the shelter shift
