About The Position

As a Shop Technician at Fabick Cat, you will be responsible for diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing Caterpillar and other heavy construction equipment. Working in a shop environment, you will utilize your mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic troubleshooting skills to ensure equipment is operating safely and efficiently. This position plays a key role in delivering the high-quality service our customers expect.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Technical or vocational training in diesel, heavy equipment, or mechanical systems.
  • 2–5 years of experience troubleshooting and repairing heavy equipment (Caterpillar preferred).
  • Proficient in using diagnostic tools and software for electronic, engine, and hydraulic systems.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, engines, and components.
  • Ability to read and interpret machine schematics, service manuals, and technical documents.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, communication skills, and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic computer literacy.
  • Must be self-motivated, organized, and able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to obtain MSHA certification if not already certified.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Caterpillar diagnostic systems and tools.
  • Basic welding and fabrication skills.
  • Prior experience in a dealership or OEM service environment.
  • Familiarity with safety and environmental standards in a heavy equipment repair setting.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and perform repairs on Caterpillar and other heavy equipment, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and routine inspections to identify potential issues before failure occurs.
  • Utilize diagnostic tools, including laptops, gauges, and instruments, to evaluate machine performance and identify faults in electronic, hydraulic, powertrain, and engine systems.
  • Disassemble and assemble machine components to manufacturer specifications using hand tools, pneumatic tools, and specialized CAT specific tooling.
  • Perform occasional basic welding and fabrication as needed.
  • Read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and work orders to complete necessary maintenance and repairs.
  • Research parts requirements and order parts through proper channels.
  • Safely load and unload components or machinery from trucks and carriers.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area in compliance with OSHA safety regulations and company standards.
  • Operate machines as needed for testing, diagnostics, or repair verification.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support shop operations.
