About The Position

This role is for an Electric Drive Controls Engineer within the Electric Propulsion Conversion Controls development ART. In this role, the candidate will create, develop, simulate, verify, and implement advanced motor control algorithms to be used in electric drive propulsion applications. This role is growing in response to the dramatic growth of battery electric and hybrid vehicle markets as well as GM’s expanding Electrification portfolio. In this role you must have a passion for electrification and a desire to become an integral part of our exciting new corporate vision: Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion. Design goals for the Electric Drive Controls Engineer include creating and developing control algorithms that meet the following constraints: Accurate, high-bandwidth torque production from an electric motor Maximize hardware capability Minimize electric drive losses High quality voltage synthesis Robustness to parameter variation and changes in operating conditions Optimize electric drive NVH Robust diagnostic coverage Flexibility through calibration

Requirements

  • Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience with either motor controls, power electronics, AC/DC drive systems or a combination
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with AC electric machine operating principles and 3-phase switching power converter topologies
  • Experience in developing digital control algorithms for 3-phase switching power converters and AC electric machines
  • Fluency in using MATLAB/Simulink for modeling and simulation of electric drives
  • Ability to follow algorithms coded in the C programming language
  • Ability to create and present information to leadership, peers, and customers in a clear and concise manner
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with domestic and international business partners
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Able to work with minimum supervision and full autonomy

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or PhD degree in Engineering
  • 5+ years’ experience with either motor controls, power electronics, AC/DC drive systems or a combination
  • 5+ years of experience with AC electric machine operating principles and 3-phase switching power converter topologies
  • Technical problem-solving skills and experience in the production domain to address vehicle level issues
  • Hands-on experience working in high-voltage laboratory and dynamometer environment
  • Knowledge of embedded compiler, debugging tools and software

Responsibilities

  • Develop embedded control algorithms and diagnostics for AC electric machines and 3-phase switching power converters
  • Perform simulation and analysis of electric drives and high voltage power electronics
  • Plan and perform algorithm development and/or verification in hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) benches, dynamometer facilities, and development vehicles
  • Work closely with software, calibration, electric motor and inverter design teams to ensure on-time, robust controls development
  • Lead, coordinate and collaborate w/ departments outside VMEC such as Systems & Safety, Electrical Architecture, Software Defined Vehicle, Calibration and Vehicle Performance
  • Actively pursue cost reduction and performance and efficiency improvement advanced projects in the motor controls space
  • Document and communicate control enhancements at technical review meetings per program timing
