Software Development Engineer - US Federal

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and enhance critical Observability services, including Monitoring, Logging, Alerting, and Tracing.
• Develop data capture and collection services using pioneering technologies across diverse infrastructure environments (Kubernetes, OpenStack, Bare Metal, etc.).
• Design and develop core software modules for real-time and batch data processing.
• Construct Metrics ingestion pipelines, Alert definitions, and automation for Dashboard lifecycle management.
• Build and deploy infrastructure components in production environments.
• Champion all aspects of observability with a focus on data quality, integrity, and availability.
• Evaluate and implement new open-source and cloud-native tools and technologies as needed.
• Participate in the on-call rotation to support the observability platform.
• Manage and optimize Workday within the air-gapped U.S. AWS cloud regions.
• Collaborate closely with our commercial software engineering teams responsible for the overall Workday platform.
• Partner with the Workday Federal Cyber Defense team to ensure security operations, cybersecurity posture, governance, risk, compliance, and platform security health.

Requirements

• BS/MS in Computer Science or a related technical field.
• Strong software engineering background with a consistent record of delivering high-quality products at scale.
• 3 or more years of hands-on experience in Object-Oriented Programming (Java, Python; Go is a plus) and the ability to design systems that meet business needs.
• Proven experience building high-performance data capture/collection systems, API design, and reliable data delivery.
• Proven experience utilizing Time-Series Databases and Log collection and management.
• 3 or more years of experience building high-performance data ingestion software, addressing concurrency, latency, and efficiency challenges.
• Fluency in Linux.
• Experience with Infrastructure Automation (Ansible, Chef, Terraform).
• Production-level Software Development experience including the conception, specifying, crafting, programming, documenting, testing, and bug fixing involved in building and maintaining applications, frameworks, or other software components.
• Experience deploying production services to cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and using containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).

Nice-to-haves

• Strong understanding of scalable architecture and performance optimization for web applications.
• Back-end engineering experience, database technologies, and API Development, including, but not limited to protocols like REST and SOAP as well as various programming languages.
• Crafting, implementing, and analyzing algorithms, with a consistent record of Algorithmic Thinking.
• Validated experience applying Object Oriented Design principles such as encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism, and abstraction to build flexible and reusable software components.
• Experience developing Code Testing strategies with an emphasis on understanding various methodologies, such as unit testing, integration testing, functional testing, and regression testing, as well as the ability to use testing tools and frameworks.
• Strong sense of ownership and delivery of finished products. A balance between craftsmanship and the need to ship products to customers.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a strong focus on Team Collaboration and customer impact.

• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Benefits

• Annualized base salary range for primary location: $128,800 USD - $193,200 USD.
• Additional US location(s) base pay range: $122,400 USD - $217,200 USD.
• Eligible for the Workday Bonus Plan or a role-specific commission/bonus, as well as annual refresh stock grants.
• Flexible work schedule allowing for a combination of in-person and remote work.
