The Opportunity Join USAA as an Intermediate level Software Engineer and contribute to the critical Experience Intelligence initiative, focused on enhancing member experience insights. In this role, you will apply your solid foundation in software development, troubleshooting, and observability to build and maintain essential platforms. You'll work within dynamic, distributed systems, utilizing telemetry and observability to uncover valuable business and operational data. This is a great opportunity to grow your skills in root cause analysis and cloud-based system management within a collaborative team environment. We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX, or Phoenix, AZ. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or 4 additional years of experience beyond the minimum requirement can be used in lieu of a degree OR Approved certification from CodeUp, Galvanize, VetFIT (Veterans for IT) or eFIT (Employees for IT).
  • 2 years of software development experience specific to a discipline/technology.
  • 1 year of experience delivering technology solutions in all phases of the software systems and application development lifecycle.
  • Basic Understanding of one or more of the following: Java, Swift, Objective-C, Cobol, JavaScript, Kotlin, C++, HTML, CSS, SQL, Go, and Python
  • Knowledge and understanding of troubleshooting applications and systems within production issues.
  • Ability to quickly understand applicable business acumen to provide appropriate Engineering solutions
  • Ability to effectively articulate technical challenges and solutions.
  • Basic understanding of cloud technologies and tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Deep Expertise in Software Development: Proven ability to design, build, and maintain complex software platforms, with a strong foundation in coding languages such as Python, Go, and Java.
  • Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Observability Engineering: Demonstrated experience in identifying the root causes of issues through systematic debugging, log analysis, and performance profiling, and leveraging observability platforms (e.g., Datadog, Elastic) to ensure system health and performance.
  • Cloud Computing Proficiency (AWS Focus): Strong understanding and practical experience with core AWS services (EC2, S3, Lambda, DynamoDB), and familiarity with deploying and managing applications in both public and private cloud environments. Experience with AWS Bedrock and Bedrock Agents is a plus.
  • Data Management and Database Skills: Mastery of SQL, including complex joins, indexing, and query optimization. Proficient in data modeling, schema design, and performance tuning of databases.
  • Agile Development and Collaboration: Experience working effectively in agile environments, collaborating closely with architects, product owners, scrum masters, and other team members to deliver high-quality software components.
  • Complex Distributed Systems Experience: Ability to thrive in and manage complex, distributed systems, understanding the interplay of business and operational telemetry to derive real-time insights.

  • Design, develop, code, and test technical solutions
  • Write code to deliver features, and improvements, on a regular basis
  • Investigates and resolve technical problems and production issues through troubleshooting techniques
  • Continually improves operations by conducting systems analysis and recommending changes in policies and procedures.
  • Prepares and installs solutions by determining and designing system specifications, standards, and programming.
  • Follows the software development lifecycle.
  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
