About The Position

Software Engineer–Vehicle Management Systems Company: The Boeing Company The Boeing Company is currently seeking an Associate Software Engineer–Vehicle Management Systems to support our Experimental Systems Group (ESG) Flight Software (FSW) team located in Seal Beach, California. This position will focus on supporting the Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) Software Engineering organization. This role is ideal for software engineers who enjoy working close to flight hardware and mission operations, care deeply about safety, reliability, and performance, and want to grow into a domain expert in Vehicle Management Systems (VMS) for advanced aerospace and autonomy platforms. You will design, implement, and validate software components that support guidance, navigation, and control functions; integrate sensor and actuator interfaces; collaborate with autonomy specialists to engineer algorithms for autonomous controls; and contribute to the real-time execution environment for vehicle control. The idea candidate will collaborate with systems and flight software engineers to translate requirements and interface control documents (ICDs) into robust architectures and well-defined control logic, with clear timing, units, limits, and fault-handling behaviors. You will build and maintain simulation- and hardware-in-the-loop test assets to verify algorithms and interfaces under nominal and off-nominal conditions; write unit/integration tests and verification procedures; contribute to test/integration workflows, code reviews, and documentation; and support configuration management and release activities for mission-critical software.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience in software development using C, C++, Python, Bash/Shell
  • 2+ years of experience in VxWorks (RTOS), Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Unix/POSIX
  • 2+ years of experience in GitLab, GitLab Runner, Git, CMake, GDB
  • 2+ years of experience in Agile/Scrum practices, real-time embedded software development, RTOS concepts (tasking, scheduling, interrupts), and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.
  • Knowledge of techniques to help identify a customer's organization, capabilities, practices, support resources, preferences, problems, and other constraints in order to provide effective product support and technical issue resolution.
  • Knowledge of international simulator regulatory standards, data and database constituents, simulator motion systems, and the simulation tools and processes used to provide flight simulators to customers.
  • Knowledge of industry, military and government specifications, handbooks and standards.
  • Knowledge of real-time software architecture and design methodologies.
  • Ability to synthesize real-time software architectures and designs that meet real-time requirements, characteristics and constraints.
  • Knowledge of domains, characteristics, constraints and products that require real-time software and influence architecture, requirements, interfaces, designs, and integration/test approaches. Real-time domain examples include control systems, human interfaces and signal processing. Examples of characteristics and constraints that impact real-time software include hardware/software timing, sizing, bandwidth, optimization and synchronization. Examples of products include aircraft, missiles, airborne/shipboard/space systems/ground-based operational systems and real-time support systems such as simulators and training systems.
  • Knowledge of real-time target environments, including processor and network architectures, communication protocols, simulation frameworks and electrical interfaces.
  • Ability to build, integrate and troubleshoot software components.
  • Ability to understand the big picture and the inter-relationships of all positions and activities in the system, including the impact of changes in one area on another area. This includes the ability to see and understand the inter-relationships between components of systems and plans, anticipate future events, and apply the principles of systems thinking to accelerate performance.
  • Knowledge of aircraft systems (e.g., avionics, hydraulic, electrical, egress systems), components (e.g., multifunction displays wing, engine, landing gear transmission), and loadable/non-loadable software (e.g., radar operational programs, inertial navigation programs, operational flight programs).

Responsibilities

  • Partners with cross-functional engineering teams and contributes to identify, review, and inform requirements and specifications for vehicle management.
  • Contributes to the development of vehicle management software and partners with stakeholders to support integration of externally generated functions into vehicle management systems.
  • Supports development of test plans and test cases for vehicle management software validation.
  • Contributes to verification, validation, and integration processes for vehicle management software in compliance with internal and industry standards and regulations.
  • Supports providing input on software implementations during system-level design and architecture.
  • Participates in the investigation and resolution of vehicle management software-related issues reported by users or that occurred during system operation.
  • Supports the development and maintenance of software documentation, including design documents, user manuals, and technical specifications.
  • Supports implementation of current and emerging technologies, tools, frameworks, and methods in vehicle management software development.
