The Southern California (SOCAL) Fleet Operational Readiness Division, Code 25, manages the air, surface, submarine, and combat system test and analysis, weapon evaluation, mobile target, tactical exercise analysis, magnetic signature reduction, and range support programs assigned to the Department’s Southern California operations. Code 25 prepares, operates, maintains, and repairs underwater acoustic tracking instrumentation, mobile Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) targets MK 30, unmanned underwater vehicles and other ASW targets. They provide and conduct direct liaison with Southern California Offshore Range Extension (SCORE) and Fleet range users on matters dealing with underwater range scheduling, underwater tracking instrumentation, and technical support services for range/off-range operations. In addition, they perform aircraft, surface ship, and submarine shipboard electronic systems evaluation and radiated noise measurements, analysis, and reporting. They support the Department’s ship test and analysis functions in Southern California. They operate and maintain the San Clemente Island Underwater Range (SCIUR), Fleet Operational Readiness and Accuracy Check Site (FORACS) and Shipboard Electronics Systems Evaluation Facility (SESEF) ship test ranges in the Southern California area and the Magnetic Silencing Facility (MSF) treatment and measurement facilities. Reporting to the Program Manager, the Sonar Tactical Trainer will provide dynamic teaching & training as well as assessment that requires advanced knowledge of U.S. Navy Anti-Submarine and Surface Warfare Capabilities and Limitations on the San Diego Detachment Support Services contract. This position is located in San Diego, CA.

Requirements

  • An active secret clearance is required to be considered for this position.
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related technical discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, technical certifications, training, or work/military experience.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience with Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and/or Surface Warfare (SUW) systems as a tactical instructor responsible for training personnel in journeyman- and master-level training environments.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience as an instructor in a Navy training environment, including curriculum maintenance, writing learning objectives, preparing test items, evaluating instructional materials and results of instruction, and counseling students on academic performance.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience with the Integrated Undersea Surveillance System (IUSS), with the ability to operate and train personnel at a moderate to advanced level.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience with AEGIS Combat Systems related to SONAR and SONAR test systems.
  • Certified technician and operator of AN/SQQ-89 ASW suites, including prevailing and replacement systems, specifically A(V)15 ACB-11 and later variants.
  • Must possess two (2) or more of the below certifications: Anti-Sub Warfare (ASW) Mission Specialist ASW Specialist Underwater Fire Control System MK-116 MOD 7 Anti-Submarine Warfare Control System Operator Journeyman Surface Ship USW Supervisor AN/SQQ-89A(V) 15 Sonar Supervisor Integrated Undersea Surveillance System (IUSS) Master Integrated Undersea Surveillance System (IUSS) Journeyman
  • Must possess basic computer literacy and data entry skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (to include MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Must possess strong time management skills.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, changing, and challenging environment.
  • Travel Required 25% travel required.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • Master/Afloat Training Specialist certification desired.
  • Experience as a qualified Tactical Action Officer, Anti-Submarine Warfare Evaluator (ASWE), or Surface/Subsurface Warfare Coordinator (SSUWC) desired.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, organizes, and conducts training and educational programs for customer personnel.
  • Provides dynamic teaching & training as well as assessment that require advanced knowledge of U.S. Navy Anti-Submarine and Surface Warfare Capabilities and Limitations.
  • Conducts dynamic assessment of the sailors’ abilities to comply with approved maintenance, operational procedures, and ship’s Battle Orders and thereafter provides formal appraisal of performance with recommendations for improvement and methods to maintain technical and tactical proficiency.
  • Observes and assesses contemporaries during Practice and Certification Teaches per requirements NAVEDTRA 135.
  • Prepares, reviews; and customizes curriculum lesson plans and instructor guide in support of traditional classroom teaching.
  • Creates unit level surface ship lessons learned on ASW operations identified, tactics debrief products completed, and event surface ship participation debrief schedules.
  • Supports Course Reviews and Curriculum Updates, conducts training gap analysis provides formal feedback and recommendation for Course improvement.
  • Documents the training conducted with specifics of the individual areas / watch station and is responsible for generation of a formal assessment of measure of success via written report.
  • Develops, tests, maintains, and delivers moderately complex ASW/SUW training programs and related materials in support of training objectives.
  • Establishes and reviews course content and objectives.
  • Conducts training sessions and develops criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of training activities.
  • Maintains records of training activities, participant progress, and program effectiveness.
  • Maintains current knowledge of relevant technologies as assigned.
  • Bid and proposal support if requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.
