About The Position

Des Moines Public Schools is seeking qualified applicants for the 26-27 school year to serve as a Special Education Teacher. This position will start in August 2026. Any Strat II:BD endorsed applicant OR applicants willing to obtain a conditional license are encouraged to apply. This position will teach high school English but does not require an English endorsement. Applicants must be comfortable with English content. This position will teach at the newly combined District-Wide Programs housed at Woodlawn School. Please note: The posted salary is drawn from the 25-26 Salary Schedule as the 26-27 Salary Schedule is not yet final. TITLE: Special Education Teacher POSITION TYPE: TCHR

Requirements

  • Valid Iowa teaching license (Strat II:BD).
  • Demonstrate effectiveness in oral and written communications.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an urban school district
  • CPR certification.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver daily lessons, aligned to state and district standards, that meet students’ individual needs and ensure growth.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve learning.
  • Participate in building and district professional learning communities to plan for instruction, analyze data, and create assessments.
  • Work with colleagues to make accommodations to instruction and curriculum to meet the learning needs of student with IEPs.
  • Monitor student learning on a daily basis.
  • Use multiple data points to guide and individualize instruction.
  • Communicate with families on a regular basis.
  • Participate in professional development.
  • Demonstrate consistent progress on meeting the eight Iowa Teaching Standards
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Attend work promptly and on a regular basis.
  • Maintain a satisfactory working relationship with staff, students, and families.
  • Assist with other duties as needed to maintain a safe and orderly school.
