About The Position

Morrison Center is seeking a Special Education Teacher for a Special Purpose Private School, in Scarborough Maine. Full-Time Morrison Center’s Special Purpose Private School provides a trauma-informed, holistic educational experience for students with autism, physical disabilities, cognitive delays, and behavioral challenges. Our team-based model emphasizes experiential learning, functional life skills, and unconditional positive regard.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree with appropriate and valid Special Education certification as required by the State Department of Education.
  • Assists with bus duty at the beginning and end of program session.
  • CPR and First Aid Certificates
  • Safety Management training
  • Adheres to state expectations and requirements for prompt arrival at work and reliable presence on the job, including return from scheduled/unscheduled breaks and a clear understanding of sick leave and tardiness policies.
  • Participates in the development of monthly/yearly calendar.
  • Assists in ancillary team tasks such as cleaning and preparing classroom materials.
  • Participates in weekly staff meetings for planning, progress reporting and consulting with other team members.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and documentation skills
  • Ability to contribute positively to a multidisciplinary team and school community.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Applied Behavior Analysis methodology preferred
  • Experience in a functional life skills setting and/or an SPPS preferred

Responsibilities

  • Plans and executes daily lesson plans in accordance with program curriculum and each student’s Individual Education Program.
  • Participates in the development of each student’s Individual Education Program.
  • Evaluates the cognitive and developmental levels of each student according to IEP schedule.
  • Function as a member of the multi-disciplinary team and facilitates classroom schedule on a daily basis.
  • Supervises and coordinates the day-to-day schedules of Ed Techs as well as student interns or volunteers.
  • Attends to the general health and welfare of each student as needed, specifically:
  • Participates in therapeutic feeding programs.
  • Dispenses authorized medication under guidance of agency nurse.
  • Cares for student’s ADL needs, including personal care.
  • Maintains written and/or phone contact with parents as needed; this can be on a daily basis recorded in the student’s notebook or verbal reports at the end of the program day.
  • Seeks expertise of appropriate team member when issues arise.
  • Assists with bus duty at the beginning and end of program session.
  • Implements PT, OT and ST programs in the classroom under the guidance of the respective therapist(s).
  • Contributes to a positive work environment in a way that sustains or enhances the Center’s positive image and reputation for service.
  • Accepts management/supervisory directives, adjusts promptly and calmly to new situations and performs effectively under stressful conditions.
