About The Position

The Special Needs Paraprofessional Camp Counselor works closely with campers who require additional support to fully participate in camp activities. This role provides 1:1 or small-group assistance, helping campers succeed socially, emotionally, behaviorally, and physically while promoting independence, inclusion, and positive peer interactions. Paraprofessionals collaborate with Unit Counselors, Special Needs Coordinators, and camp leadership to ensure a safe, supportive, and inclusive camp experience. Coordinate inclusion services and support plans for campers with special needs Provide direct support to assigned campers during daily camp routines, activities, transitions, and special events Facilitate inclusion by adapting activities so campers can safely and successfully participate alongside peers Encourage independence, confidence, and self-advocacy while offering appropriate guidance Support campers with emotional regulation, sensory needs, social skills, and behavior management strategies

Requirements

  • At least one year of experience as a senior counselor or specialty director at a licensed day or resident camp.
  • Minimum age: 21 years old (preferred)
  • Experience working with children with special needs in a camp, school, childcare, or recreation setting preferred
  • Background in education, psychology, social work, human services, or related field a plus
  • Ability to remain calm, patient, and flexible in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills
  • Physical ability to actively participate in camp activities and assist campers as needed

Nice To Haves

  • Degree or coursework in special education, psychology, social work, or related field
  • Experience in camp, school, or youth program leadership
  • First Aid / CPR and relevant certifications
