About The Position

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Special Procedures Nurse for our Prep & Recovery department here in Hyde Park. You will be able to work with physicians who are constantly pushing the boundaries of possibility, conducting groundbreaking research, and providing lifesaving, personalized patient care. This position is 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area. As a Special Procedures Nurse, you will be responsible for providing nursing care that is goal-directed and adapted to the needs of an individual, a family, and/or community during health and illness. In this role under the direction of an Attending Physician or a licensed independent practitioner, RN provides technically complex and high risk nursing care services to patients which may include one or more of the following categories: sedation, intravenous infusions, complex procedures, e.g., lumbar puncture, cardiac catherization; This may also include specialized monitoring during procedure and recovery phase; The RN may have Charge Nurse responsibility for his/her assigned unit.

Requirements

  • A completed Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Associate Degree Nurses are required to enroll in a BSN program within six (6) to nine (9) months of hire, and make progress toward and complete their BSN degree within 30 months. ADN nurses receive 100% tuition reimbursement towards a BSN degree from an accredited program
  • Currently licensed as a registered professional nurse in the State of Illinois
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and/or PALS Certifications
  • Must comply with UChicago Medicine’s COVID-19 Vaccination requirement as a condition of employment. If you have already received the vaccination, you must provide proof as part of the pre-employment process. This is in addition to your compliance with the Flu Vaccination requirement as well. Medical and religious exemptions will be considered consistent with applicable law. Lastly, a pre-employment physical, drug screening, and background check are also required for all employees prior to hire.

Nice To Haves

  • BSN degree or higher
  • Leadership/Management experience in the area of specialty
  • Experience working in a research environment
  • 2 years of recent Critical Care experience
  • One additional certification in an area of specialty

  • Provides patient care in a compassionate and empathetic manner; demonstrates knowledge of age-specific considerations in the provision of care. Involves a multidisciplinary team as needed to support patient and family psychological, social, and spiritual needs.
  • Accurately completes required patient assessment, documentation, and interpretations for each patient encounter. Possesses sound professional judgment for timely physician intervention as needed. Recognizes patient conditions requiring immediate actions, initiates appropriate life-supporting interventions while communicating appropriately with physicians.
  • Maintains nursing equipment and work areas in proper working condition; reports malfunctioning equipment or housekeeping issues to the appropriate person. Maintains a neat and clean work area with equipment. Maintains adequate inventory control of all necessary supplies. Emergency equipment is maintained with adequate availability, good working order, and restocked as needed with a fiscal awareness and accountability.
  • Interfaces with customers, specifically patients, families, visitors, and UCMC staff in a professional, positive, and accommodating manner; demonstrates knowledge of AIDET principles and employs them in all situations; demonstrates flexibility in accommodating special needs of customers whenever possible.
  • Performs all required Quality Assurance testing as indicated or as required by UCMC.
  • Rotates to clinical areas as directed to assist in safe staffing ratios; utilizes resources to safely transport sedated patients to an appropriate or designated area within the UCMC.
