About The Position

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! The role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, which is focused on addressing two of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space infrastructure and increasing mobility on-orbit. As a Special Programs Mission Design Analyst, you will work in our Seattle location and perform mission and trajectory design and analysis to support proposal capture and program execution of vital U.S. government space programs. You will also support systems engineers as needed. National Security Space is a new and rapidly-growing market for Blue Ring. You will be joining a specialized team focused on executing the delivery of this needed space mobility capability to the government. Blue Ring possesses an unprecedented amount of delta-v from chemical and electric propulsion, and you will be responsible for a broad range of mission and trajectory analysis tasks that leverage these capabilities.

Requirements

  • M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related fields.
  • 2+ years of proven experience focused on satellite mission design.
  • Strong fundamentals in astrodynamics, high-thrust trajectory optimization, and low-thrust trajectory optimization.
  • Applied experience in navigation tools such as Monte, STK/ODTK, FreeFlyer, Copernicus, or GMAT.
  • Experience in at least one of the following languages: Python, Julia, or C++.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Active Top Secret (TS) / Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) security clearance with Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) with polygraph

Nice To Haves

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields
  • Experience using the Monte software package.
  • Development of trajectory optimization algorithms from first principles.
  • Understanding of ground-based satellite navigation and statistical orbit determination
  • Previous experience in mission and trajectory analysis (e.g. coverage analyses, link budgets, etc.)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the mission design lifecycle from conceptualization through operational flight.
  • Multi-disciplinary spacecraft subsystem analysis domain knowledge (power, propulsion, telecommunications)
  • Familiarity with U.S. government space systems and long-term acquisition strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Mission concept analysis: Support conceptual studies and proposals that define the future of space exploration.
  • Work on Blue Ring mission applications through the entire mission lifecycle, including the initial proposal stages through live operations as needed.
  • Leverage Blue Ring’s unprecedented hybrid delta-v capabilities to design and analyze missions that span a variety of orbital destinations.
  • Run internally-developed mission design and navigation analysis tools and interface with the development team to add features as needs arise.
  • Maintain awareness of overall system engineering and assist in development of mission architecture
  • Distill your work and results at an appropriate level for effective communication with government sponsors.
  • Mission Design Algorithm Innovation: Develop and validate cutting-edge high-thrust and low-thrust trajectory design algorithms across a broad range of dynamical regimes.
  • Collaborate Across Disciplines: Work closely with navigation teams on operational readiness and system integration.
  • Assist in live mission operations: Willingness and ability to support live maneuver operations.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, paid parental leave, short and long-term disability, 401(k) with a company match of up to 5%, and an Education Support Program.
  • Paid Time Off: Up to four (4) weeks per year based on weekly scheduled hours, and up to 14 company-paid holidays.
