About The Position

The Specialty Pharmacy Technician works under the direct supervision of the pharmacist. This position is responsible for the overall coordination and processing of new patient medication orders and reorders. This individual works with both internal and external customers to ensure that orders are processed in a timely manner and meet all financial and clinical requirements prior to fulfillment, including, the provision of customer service and expertise to patients or providers regarding specialty pharmacy enrollment, prescription processing, benefits inquiries, prescription status inquiries, and any other question as it pertains to their account. The Specialty Pharmacy Technician is responsible for answering incoming calls and completing outbound calls with patients, physicians and pharmacists, and preparing, dispensing and packaging of drugs to be delivered for patient use under the supervision of the pharmacist. The technician meets the requirements of being “qualified pharmacy technician” as established by the State Board of Pharmacy, and holds a pharmacy technician certification from a State Board of Pharmacy accredited agency. The technician adheres to all regulations as established by the State Board of Pharmacy. The specialty pharmacy technician III candidate meets all qualifications of the main Outpatient pharmacy technician I and II in addition to skills and participation in new employee training. Requirements

  • The technician meets the requirements of being “qualified pharmacy technician” as established by the State Board of Pharmacy
  • Holds a pharmacy technician certification from a State Board of Pharmacy accredited agency
  • The technician adheres to all regulations as established by the State Board of Pharmacy
  • The specialty pharmacy technician III candidate meets all qualifications of the main Outpatient pharmacy technician I and II in addition to skills and participation in new employee training
  • The specialty pharmacy technician adheres to all specialty pharmacy policies and procedures

Responsibilities

  • Works directly with patients, providers, insurance companies, health plans, and pharmacy team members regarding specialty pharmacy prescription fulfillment, benefits inquiries, processing, prescription status inquiries, and any other question as it pertains to their account.
  • Obtains prescription authorizations/reauthorizations
  • Screens, identifies, resolves or defers orders that have accounts receivable or clinical problems to the pharmacist or pharmacy manager
  • Engage patients in assistance programs whenever available and appropriate
  • Prepare medications for shipment and participate in packaging and shipping responsibilities
  • Participate in quality improvement activities
  • Participates in pharmacy committee activities, as requested
  • Delivery of medications to clinic
  • Works with Pharmacist to gather necessary clinical information needed to evaluate specialty medications needs and/or effectiveness
  • Maintain Medication synchronization for all specialty patients when requested
