About The Position

A Speech Therapy Externship involves supervised practical experience in a field setting, allowing students to apply their knowledge and skills in speech-language pathology under the guidance of a qualified professional. This experience aims to provide real-world exposure and enhance clinical skills in areas like assessment, treatment planning, and patient communication.  At Lyon-Martin, you will be working in a clinic that provides gender affirming health care services, and the focus of this externship will be providing gender affirming speech therapy for our patients. Requirements

  • Enrollment in a Graduate Program: Externships are typically part of the curriculum for students pursuing a master's degree in speech-language pathology.
  • Academic Performance: Strong academic standing and demonstrated ability to learn and apply knowledge.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with patients, families, and other professionals.
  • Professionalism: Commitment to ethical behavior, confidentiality, and adherence to professional standards.
  • At least 2nd year speech therapy graduate student
  • Culturally sensitive/humble and able to work with a diverse population. Interest in or ability to work with high acuity patient population.
  • Experience working with lesbian, bisexual, transgender, non-binary, gender non-conforming, and intersex clients.
  • Experience working with populations with varying disabilities, racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds and economic statuses.
  • Experience working with clients who do sex work, those experiencing homelessness, people who have challenges with mental illness and/or are using substances, those of with a history of incarceration, people of varying ages.

Nice To Haves
