About The Position

The Senior Director, Data Science & AI Engineering leads strategy and execution for AI and machine learning across a broad client group, partnering directly with senior executives to deliver solutions that create measurable business impact. This role serves as the engine for Macy’s most complex AI initiatives—turning business priorities into scalable, production-ready solutions. By driving adoption, defining standards, and ensuring ROI, the Senior Director accelerates Macy’s evolution into a data-led, AI-powered retailer.

Requirements

  • Visionary Leadership: Shapes enterprise AI strategy and drives adoption of advanced technologies to deliver transformative business outcomes.
  • Executive Stakeholder Management: Builds trusted partnerships with senior executives and influences strategic priorities through data-driven insights.
  • Technical Acumen: Expert in machine learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn), generative AI, LLM integration, and ML Ops practices; advanced experience with cloud platforms (GCP), containerization, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code.
  • Enterprise Strategy Execution: Translates vision into scalable solutions, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards and measurable impact.
  • Brings 10+ years of experience in data science and AI engineering, including 5+ years driving enterprise-scale initiatives and influencing executive strategy; advanced degree preferred.
  • Proven track record of delivering end-to-end AI solutions that drive measurable business impact in a complex, fast-paced environment.
  • Skilled in architecting and scaling ML pipelines and integrating generative AI and LLMs into production systems.
  • Experienced in influencing senior stakeholders and translating technical strategies into actionable business outcomes.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, coach managers and individual contributors report to this position and actively raise the talent bar across the Enterprise Data & Analytics Team.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to senior leadership, aligning AI and machine learning strategies with enterprise priorities.
  • Shape and execute a roadmap for AI enablement across a broad client group, ensuring solutions address critical business challenges and deliver measurable outcomes.
  • Define success metrics for AI initiatives and track impact to demonstrate tangible value and ROI.
  • Oversee the design, development, and deployment of advanced machine learning and generative AI solutions, including LLM integration, real-time inference, and scalable ML pipelines.
  • Implement best-in-class ML Ops practices, including CI/CD automation, containerization, and infrastructure-as-code for production environments.
  • Establish and enforce enterprise standards for AI engineering, governance, and risk management, ensuring compliance and ethical practices.
  • Drive modernization of AI platforms and infrastructure by evaluating emerging technologies and implementing solutions for scalability and performance.
  • Collaborate with Data Engineering, Architecture, and Governance teams to ensure alignment with enterprise data strategies and infrastructure standards.
  • Champion change management and user adoption of AI capabilities, embedding data-driven practices across Macy’s and increasing organizational digital IQ.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends and emerging technologies to position Macy’s as a leader in AI-driven retail innovation.
  • Manages team budgets and participates in financial reviews.
