The Senior Hardware Engineer is responsible for all technical aspects of electrical system design for Bird products, including product architecture, planning, implementation (electrical hardware and FPGA logic (HDL)), configuration management, functional and compliance testing, and lifecycle support. This position operates in alignment with Design Engineering Management objectives and serves as a technical authority within a multi-disciplinary engineering environment. This role interfaces with software, test, mechanical, layout, manufacturing, quality, technical support, field applications, subcontractors, Bird management, and customers. Activities and assignments may include R&D, new product development, sustaining engineering, engineering processes and methods.

Requirements

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent professional experience.
  • Ten or more years of experience in FPGA logic development and electrical circuit design.
  • Competent use of Xilinx (AMD) and/or Altera FPGA devices and toolchains.
  • Competent use of schematic capture and PCB layout tools (e.g. Altium).
  • Proficient use of laboratory test equipment including oscilloscopes, signal generators, logic analyzers, VNAs, spectrum analyzers, and related instrumentation.

Responsibilities

  • Work independently with minimal supervision, exercising sound engineering judgment to select appropriate tools, procedures, and methods to meet project and product requirements.
  • The engineer contributes to and leads all phases of development (requirements, design, construction, test/validation, and configuration/release management) for new and sustaining projects, including technical trade studies and risk-based decision making.
  • Develop an environment of continual improvement through the use of Lean tools.

  • Be able to describe the quality policy and goals, your contribution to quality, and the effects of not observing quality and customer requirements.
  • Provide technical mentorship and design guidance to less-experienced engineers and contribute to design reviews and engineering standards.
  • Provide leadership in the architecture and design of hardware and FPGA logic.
  • Perform detailed design of electrical board schematics and layouts for high-density, cost-sensitive, and/or low-noise systems.
  • Incorporate Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Test (DFT), production yield, and product lifecycle considerations into designs.
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend hardware components with consideration for performance, availability, and lifecycle risk.
  • Create and maintain project technical documentation, interface control documents, and project management documentation, including system requirements, specifications, and test requirements.
  • Communicate technical concepts, consequences, and tradeoffs effectively through speaking, writing, and diagramming.
  • Demonstrate a strong engineering ethic, including attention to detail, quality, accuracy, clear communication, and honesty.
  • Work effectively with teams of varying skills and personalities in a collaborative, constructive, and flexible manner.
  • The engineer is expected to advance their technical skills in order to stay abreast of relevant industry best practices and emerging technologies.
