About The Position

The Sr. Land Manager manages all regional land-related activities and supervises the activities of certain business unit land department staff with minimal supervision. The individual will focus on all current and prospective land matters and must collaborate with other Land Managers, the Regional Land Manager, VP of Land and others to address business unit land issues. They will also focus on providing all necessary land support for the execution of their respective business unit's goals and make the Regional Land Manager aware of all area issues including, but not limited to, loss of lease and personnel issues. This will include collaboration with land and business unit leadership. The individual must have exceptional supervisory/organizational skills and a wide range of experience including exposure to land administration, regulatory, exploitation, exploration, and business development across multiple basins, with a focus on the States of Texas and New Mexico.

Requirements

  • Strong level of skill in Microsoft Office, especially Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Experience leading others with industry/company software including, but not limited to, working in QLS & AFE Navigator.
  • Familiarity with Enverus and the latest industry intel resources available to SM including AI.
  • Advanced ability to apply extensive and diversified knowledge of land principles, expert techniques, modifications, and extension of theories. Advanced knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations.
  • Advanced understanding of land management principles including negotiations, contracts, leasing, and titles (i.e. title, JOA’s, oil and gas leases, curative documents, surface/mineral permits).
  • Advanced at negotiating, constructing, and presenting commercial and business contracts and leases.
  • Advanced understanding and knowledge of exploration, development, and acquisition/divestiture economic metrics.
  • Advanced understanding of resource play evaluation methods and risk analysis.
  • Has advanced understanding of land and technical (engineering and geotechnical) knowledge of multiple basins/resource plays within the Lower 48.
  • B.B.A. degree in Energy Management, Land Management or other Business degree
  • Minimum of 12 years of relevant industry work experience.

  • Certified Professional Landman status preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage due diligence efforts in the acquisition and/or divestment of properties, settle surface related issues; either independently or in collaboration with Resource Expansion team, negotiate commercial and business-related terms associated with the purchase and/or sale of assets within the assigned geographic area
  • Manage land related activities including all aspects of operational execution, lease maintenance, partner / landowner relations, lease acquisition, trade negotiations, surface/subsurface issues and contract preparation and administration
  • Manage land staff (including Land Supervisor(s), Landmen and Land techs), providing appropriate guidance and mentoring for purposes of delivering the necessary land support to the business unit
  • Lead, analyze and resolve difficult land related situations
  • Partner with internal and external partners on legal issues, regulatory matters, exploration and production issues, gas marketing and lease record/division order issues
  • Collaborate with Regional Land Manager and others to establish and manage annual budget for leasing and acquisitions
  • Lead projects and act as a liaison with other departments, divisions and organizations
  • Manage the acquisition, maintenance, management, and disposition of properties and other related rights in order to meet corporate and regional goals
  • Strategize and collaborate with the business unit leadership team on execution of the budgeted plans and implementing a growth strategy that will support corporate, regional and asset team goals
  • Closely track and monitor G&A and Capital budgets versus spending to provide timely status reports to management
  • Act as an interdisciplinary coordinator to ensure efficient project execution
  • Make recommendations to Regional Land Manager on hiring, promotions, career development or status changes of personnel. Conduct business with the highest ethical standards and make decisions that ensure the safety of all people associated with SM facilities
