Requirements

  • BA/BS degree from an accredited institution, or equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience in California workers’ compensation underwriting, or equivalent
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced, decision-oriented environment
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and analytical skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Strong automation skills including MS Office products
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment

Responsibilities

  • Risk Evaluation:Selection, retention, and pricing of new and existing business in accordance with the company’s underwriting philosophy and guidelines.
  • Broker Relationships:Proactively develops and fosters positive, professional relationships with the company’s agency partners to promote the company’s products and services.
  • Premium Growth:Works closely with Field Sales Managers on broker plan management (e.g., generation of submissions, target quote and bind ratios, co‑developing agency business plans and incentives).
  • Underwriting Profit:Collaborates with Field Sales Managers to achieve pricing and commission targets that support the company’s profitability objectives.
  • Underwrite new and renewal business in alignment with company guidelines, authority levels, and risk‑selection philosophy.
  • Build and maintain strong, professional relationships with agency partners, providing timely, ethical, and solutions‑focused support.
  • Educate agents on underwriting appetite, pricing expectations, and submission requirements.
  • Monitor key performance metrics for assigned agencies, including premium goals, business mix, and quote-to-bind ratios.
  • Drive growth by actively seeking quality new business opportunities and following up on quoted accounts.
  • Travel to agency locations as needed to provide field underwriting, quoting, and relationship management.
  • Review claims activity, inspection reports, and loss control recommendations, taking appropriate action on in‑force policies.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to resolve policy issues and ensure smooth account handling.
  • Oversee policy changes and delegate tasks to underwriting support staff as appropriate.
  • Mentor and provide training to junior team members.
