Position Overview: The Sr. Risk Analyst supports Motiva’s independent risk control function by delivering high‑quality exposure analytics, validating daily P&L, and producing accurate, timely risk reporting across Motiva’s commercial supply portfolios. This role acts as a subject‑matter resource within the Middle Office, partnering cross‑functionally with Supply Optimization, Finance, and Trading to ensure accurate measurement of inventory and market price risk. The Senior Analyst also contributes to governance, documentation, and continuous‑improvement initiatives that maintain strong controls, audit readiness, and alignment with Motiva’s Risk Policy. Operate as an independent controller within Middle Office, ensuring commercial activity complies with established Risk policies and a robust control framework. This is an on‑site position with hybrid flexibility, located at Motiva’s downtown Houston corporate headquarters. and operates on a 9/80 work schedule, providing alternating Fridays off to support work–life balance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Engineering, or similar quantitative field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in market risk, middle office, or commodity analytics.
  • Strong understanding of inventory/profitability concepts, exposure measurement, and derivative valuation.
  • Experience with one or more commodities: Crude, Intermediates, Products, Renewables, Petrochemicals.
  • Proficiency with ETRM systems (RightAngle preferred) and analytical tools such as Power BI and Excel.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to clearly explain drivers, trends, and risk impacts.
  • Working understanding of logistics (pipeline, marine/vessel, rail, truck).
  • Advanced proficiency in exposure decomposition (flat, spread, basis) and limits/DOA controls.
  • Strong capability in presenting insights and leading cross‑functional resolution of discrepancies.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or certifications (CFA, FRM, ERP).
  • Experience supporting ETRM implementations or risk‑analytics platform enhancements.
  • Knowledge of VaR/@Risk, stress testing, scenario analysis, and structured‑deal risk assessment.
  • Prior experience in refining and understanding the lifecycle of a commodity transaction.
  • Experience with crack‑spread margin management and corporate hedging programs.
  • Experience leading new activity enablement.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily monitoring and validation of inventory, pricing exposures, flat‑price risk, and spread exposures.
  • Validate opening and closing positions and ensure proper exposure decomposition (flat, time, basis).
  • Investigate and reconcile exposure or P&L discrepancies with Commercial and Finance.
  • Publish daily P&L with driver commentary; lead P&L attribution reviews.
  • Ensure adherence to Middle Office risk policies, limits, and segregation‑of‑duties standards.
  • Maintain organized, complete documentation of all risk processes.
  • Monitor compliance and publish daily MTM, position, and limit‑usage reporting to leadership.
  • Record and escalate KRIs and business incidents per policy.
  • Ensure integrity of financial accounts and lead month‑end commentary and variance explanations.
  • Collaborate with Supply Optimization regarding refinery diet, scheduling, and offtake decisions to ensure accurate exposure measurement.
  • Provide risk‑based insights on term structures, contract structures, product flows, logistics strategy, and inventory positioning.
  • Support daily ETRM processing, data‑quality checks, transaction validations, and troubleshooting.
  • Participate in system and reporting enhancement projects, including requirements gathering, UAT testing, and analytics improvements.
