This role is part of Alcon's Engineering function, a team focused on improving quality, processes, products, packaging and materials across our business to help deliver brilliant outcomes. The Sr. Tool & Mold Maker is primarily responsible for handling complex tasks in mold tooling design and plastic injection molding processes. You will apply advanced technical skills and problem-solving abilities while adhering to procedures. As a Sr. Tool & Mold Maker, you will be trusted to support production operations by helping troubleshoot, diagnose, and make repairs to injection molds at our Manufacturing Facility in Houston, TX . In this role, a typical day will include: Handle highly complex technical tasks related to mold tooling design and plastic injection molding processes, supporting operations and contributing to efficiency within defined procedures. Make significant decisions within the scope of your tasks, requiring advanced technical skills and problem-solving abilities. Adhere to GxP regulations by strictly following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and maintaining accurate and complete documentation. Ensure rigorous quality control and comply with regulatory requirements. Complete all required training and commit to continuous improvement in operations. Maintaining precision molds in a production environment. Evaluating and completing repairs/modifications and performing mold preventative maintenance. Collecting and documenting measurement results and generating reports. Performing routine operation of tool room equipment including, but not limited to manual mills, lathes, surface grinders, CNC and EDM machines. Disassembling, cleaning, repairing, and replacing defective parts in a variety of complex Molding Tools. Performing mold and tooling setups and repairs, verification of part quality and critical process parameters, mold evaluations and recommendation of repairs/modifications, basic machine and mold maintenance, and monitor/verify daily production quantities and efficiencies in accordance with standard operating procedures. Evaluating new processes, components, products, and systems in conformance with engineering specifications. Testing, adjusting, and maintaining electromechanical, mechanical, optical, pneumatic, hydro mechanical, and pressure-type measuring and indicating instruments. Setting up methods and procedures according to detailed specifications, blueprints, drawings, and requirements. Assigning and monitoring work for other technicians. Isolating problems for further analyses. This role is a critical component of our 7 days a week Toolroom support, for our four molding production suites.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • The ability to fluently read, write, understand and communicate in English
  • 1 Years of Relevant Experience
  • You should be proficient in: Mechanical Troubleshooting Skills Tool/Die/Mold Repair Skills Experience in a Manufacturing Environment Injection Molding Experience

Nice To Haves

  • Manufacturing toolroom experience within Medical Device Industry
  • Understanding of mold design, function, and applications.
  • Ability to diagnose problems in a production environment to determine when mold repairs are needed.
  • Working knowledge of fits, tolerances and allowable mold running parameters.
  • Ability to manufacture, modify, and accurately measure precision mold components to extremely tight tolerances, typically within ±0.0002” or finer.
  • Basic hot runner repair.
  • Proficient in mold polishing.
