About The Position

The Staff Accountant – Foundation supports the organization’s financial accounting operations by ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and completeness of financial data. This role performs detailed reconciliations, prepares journal entries, and assists in the preparation of financial statements, while upholding Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), TEA Financial Accountability System Resource Guide (FASRG) requirements, and Board-approved financial policies. The Staff Accountant – Foundation contributes to strong internal controls, audit readiness, and timely month- and year-end closing activities.

Requirements

  • 2 to 4 years of accounting experience; non-profit, governmental, or education sector experience required.
  • Experience with ERP systems (e.g., Tyler Munis, FloQast, Workday) and advanced Excel functionality.
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP and internal control principles.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred.
  • Progress toward CPA, TASBO, or relevant certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • General Ledger & Financial Reporting: Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, and adjustments in accordance with GAAP.
  • Perform monthly balance sheet reconciliations to maintain general ledger accuracy.
  • Assist in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Investigate discrepancies and resolve variances in assigned accounts.
  • Support timely completion of month-end and year-end close tasks.
  • Internal Controls, Compliance & Audit Support: Maintain documentation that is accurate, complete, and audit ready.
  • Ensure financial transactions align with established internal control frameworks and Board policies.
  • Support compliance with FASRG guidelines and organizational financial standards.
  • Prepare supporting schedules and respond to internal and external audit requests.
  • Process Improvement & System Support: - Recommend enhancements to accounting processes, workflows, and controls.
  • Support financial system upgrades, testing, and configuration within ERP platforms.
  • Participate in process automation initiatives to reduce manual entry and rework.
  • Assist in developing process documentation and cross-training materials.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with key stakeholder departments to ensure accurate financial transactions.
  • Provide timely explanations of account activity to internal stakeholders.
  • Help build financial literacy among departments through training and resource sharing.
  • Support accounting and reconciliation of philanthropic funds and endowment accounts, ensuring alignment with donor intent and Board-approved policies.
  • Assist in cross-walking Foundation financial activity within the organization’s consolidated audit, ensuring accurate integration with IDEA Public Schools reporting and financial statements.
  • Reconcile investment statements and endowment activity to the general ledger
  • Assist in preparing Foundation financial reports and board materials summarizing fund balances, disbursements and philanthropic activity.
  • Contribute to process improvements that enhance fund accounting accuracy, transparency, and donor stewardship
