About The Position

The Staff Engineer is a senior individual contributor responsible for shaping technical direction, driving architectural consistency, and solving the organization’s most complex engineering challenges. This role plays a critical part in ensuring our systems are scalable, reliable, and aligned with long-term business and product strategy. As a technical subject matter expert (SME), the Staff Engineer operates across teams and domains, influencing design decisions, elevating engineering standards, and providing guidance on complex system design and implementation. This role brings a forward-looking perspective, identifying risks, opportunities, and improvements that strengthen the overall platform and developer experience. The Staff Engineer partners closely with the CTO and Head of Architecture to translate strategic priorities into executable technical solutions, ensuring alignment across systems and teams. While this role has broad organizational impact, it does not include direct people management responsibilities and instead drives outcomes through technical expertise, collaboration, and influence.   • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field preferred
  • 10+ years of professional software development experience, with a proven track record of successful project leadership required
  • Proficient in multiple programming languages such as Elixir, Phoenix, React required
  • Strong understanding of software development methodologies (e.g., Agile, Scrum) and tools (e.g., JIRA, Confluence).
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.
  • Ability to work with frontend and backend systems is a plus.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a SaaS, healthcare technology/IT, or healthcare B2B environment highly preferred
  • Experience working in a startup environment is desirable

Responsibilities

  • Architectural Direction & System Design
  • Drive architectural alignment across services, integrations, and platform components in partnership with the CTO and Head of Architecture
  • Design scalable, resilient systems that support long-term product and business strategy
  • Identify and address architectural gaps, technical debt, and system risks proactively
  • Complex Problem Solving & Execution
  • Lead the design and delivery of highly complex, cross-functional initiatives spanning multiple systems
  • Own resolution of critical technical challenges, including production incidents and performance bottlenecks
  • Make high-quality technical tradeoff decisions with long-term impact in mind
  • Technical Standards & Engineering Excellence
  • Establish and reinforce best practices for system design, testing, observability, and reliability
  • Improve consistency across codebases, services, and integration patterns
  • Contribute to critical areas of the codebase where deep expertise is required
  • Cross-Team Collaboration & Influence
  • Partner with engineer tech leads to align on technical approaches and shared standards
  • Provide thoughtful guidance on design decisions, architecture, and implementation strategies
  • Influence technical direction through expertise, clear communication, and strong rationale
  • Platform & Integration Strategy
  • Guide the design and evolution of APIs, integrations, and external system interactions (e.g., EMR/vendor integrations
  • Ensure systems are designed for flexibility, scalability, and maintainability across clients and use cases

  • Identify opportunities to improve system performance, developer experience, and delivery efficiency
  • Evaluate and introduce new technologies or patterns where appropriate
  • Raise the overall technical bar through pragmatic, high-impact improvements
