About The Position

This position is responsible for supervising, planning, directing, reviewing and evaluating bridge design activities or structure inventory and load capacity rating activities on all public bridges and coordinating the Division’s support activities for the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) program. The following examples are intended only as illustrations of various types of work performed. No attempt is made to be exhaustive. Related, similar, or other logical duties are performed as assigned. The Department may require employees to perform functions beyond those contained in job descriptions. The Department may modify job descriptions based on Department needs. The Arkansas Department of Transportation is an "at will" employer.

Requirements

  • Possession of a current Arkansas license to practice professional engineering.
  • Extensive experience in bridge structural analysis, design, and load capacity rating techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of the NBIS, bridge structural analysis, design, and load capacity rating techniques or bridge design experience and thorough knowledge of the design and construction specifications and materials for all types of bridges commonly constructed by the Department.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures of the Department.
  • Effective leadership and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • The Department will consider applicants with Professional Engineering licenses from other states, with the condition that a reciprocal Arkansas license be obtained within 180 days of hire.  Failure to obtain the Arkansas license within this time period may result in immediate termination.  Candidates are responsible for verifying eligibility for reciprocity with the Arkansas PE Board before accepting a position.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule and assign work to Section members to maintain a smooth flow of work and meet project schedules.
  • Supervise Section members, implement Department policies and procedures, and interpret design specifications to assure consistent and proper bridge designs, plans, and specifications.
  • Write specifications to cover construction methods and materials when required for a specific project.
  • Review and evaluate structural designs, plans, specifications and other tasks underway or completed by the Section.
  • Coordinate staff activities with other Divisions to assure compatibility of plans and consult with contractors, materials suppliers, and fabricators to assure that projects are constructed in accordance with plans and specifications.
