About The Position

This is a full-time professional veterinary leadership position offering the opportunity to influence animal health and public health programs across the State of Maine. The position directs and oversees poultry, livestock, and, as needed, domestic animal disease control programs, playing a key role in protecting animal welfare, agricultural industries, and human public health statewide. The work involves leading and enforcing regulatory laws and implementing programs related to animal health, animal welfare, disease control, and public health. This is a highly technical and specialized role that allows for a high level of professional independence, with no technical supervision for standard veterinary activities. The position is well suited for an experienced veterinarian seeking meaningful responsibility, decision-making authority, and the ability to shape policy and program outcomes. To support evolving program needs, the employee may receive additional specialized training—such as forensics, meat inspection, or incident command—as determined by the State Veterinarian. Some training opportunities may require extended out-of-state travel. The position works collaboratively with other State Veterinarians under general administrative direction. This position can involve a hybrid work schedule, combining office and remote work. For questions specific to the position, please contact Megan Patterson at: Megan.L.Patterson@maine.gov
