About The Position

The Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice is looking for a highly energetic candidate who is self-motivated and has the working knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques for operations of high-pressure coal, gas, or oil-fired boilers and how to regulate them. The incumbent in this position will also be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the HVAC system for their assigned facility. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to manage several functions and/or assigned tasks in the Engineering Department and will possess the ability to work closely with other employees in different bargaining units to maintain the upkeep of the power generating and allied machinery at IYC Lincoln. Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of eight (8) years elementary school.
  • Requires four (4) years of experience in power plant operation and in firing high pressure and/or low pressure stationary boilers.
  • Requires the ability to pass an IDJJ/IDOC background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
  • This position is considered very heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(e)). Very Heavy work involves lifting objects weighing more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing 50 pounds or more.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends. This also requires the ability to work in a 24 hour ‘on call’ capacity.
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
  • Requires ability to walk, climb, stand, squat, kneel, or bend for long periods of time.
  • Requires ability to withstand exposure to loud noise, dirt, dust, fumes, and high temperatures.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefers basic understanding of electrical generating equipment, demonstrated by at least two (2) years of experience or relevant coursework.
  • Prefers Experience maintaining operational logs or simple records for at least two (2) years.
  • Prefers possession of Stationary Engineer License.
  • Prefers possession of EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) 608 CFC Universal Refrigeration License
  • Prefers ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate emergency action.
  • Prefers the ability to calculate fractions, decimals and percentages and to keep simple records.

Responsibilities

  • Starts up, regulates, repairs, and shuts down HVAC systems, including: Fan systems (fans, filter systems, and housing), air compressors, diesel engines and electrical generators, refrigeration systems,  (maintenance and repair of condenser units, evaporator coils, and all associated auxiliaries), domestic hot water heating systems, life safety and building automation systems.
  • Ensures that equipment operates safely, efficiently, and within established limits: conducts regular rounds of mechanical room(s), reads and monitors meters, gauges, computerized controls, and other instruments, checks and adjusts temperatures, pressures, water levels, humidity and airflow, and detects potential mechanical issues by observing machinery operation.
  • Maintains mechanical room log, recording: gauge readings, utilities consumed, maintenance work performed, and other relevant data.
  • Uses hand and power tools to perform repairs and maintenance, including: moving parts, replacing filters, replacing fan belts, and cleaning coils, checks safety devices, addresses building operational needs, and identifies and corrects any issues that arise.
  • Conducts and records tests of water used for: domestic consumption and heat generation, and adds treatment chemicals as needed.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
