About The Position

The Assistant Manager, Central Sterile, reports directly to the Department Manager, Sterile Processing (CUH), and dotted line accountability to the Department Manager, Sterile Processing (OSC / Zale). This role provides direct leadership to the Operating Room Liaison team and actively supports daily sterile processing operations. The Assistant Manager works in the department alongside staff, ensuring safe and efficient instrument workflow, compliance with standards, and reliable service to clinical partners. This position may also provide coverage for Supervisors during absences to maintain continuity of operations.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • 3 years working in sterile processing
  • 1 year working in leadership role
  • (CRCST) CRCST with Healthcare Processing Association (HSPA) or CBSPD equivalent Upon Hire
  • (CHL) CERTIFIED HEALTHCARE LEADER with Healthcare Processing Association (HSPA) or CBSPD equivalent within 1-1/2 Yrs
  • (CIS) CERTIFIED INSTRUMENT SPECIALST or Certified Endoscope Reprocessor with Healthcare Processing Association (HSPA) or CBSPD equivalent within 1-1/2 Yrs

Responsibilities

  • Leads and develops the Operating Room Liaison team by setting clear performance expectations, providing coaching and real-time feedback, and fostering accountability.
  • Facilitates HR-related conversations with staff, including coaching, performance feedback, attendance management, and corrective actions, escalating to the Department Manager as appropriate.
  • Provides leadership coverage for Supervisors during their absence and assumes Manager-level responsibilities when the Department Manager is not available, ensuring consistent oversight and continuity of operations.
  • Supports daily operations on the department floor, assisting staff with case readiness, prioritization, instrumentation needs, and real-time problem resolution.
  • Oversees daily scheduling, assignment adjustments, and staff deployment to maintain balanced coverage across shifts and functions.
  • Performs daily reconciliation of MyTime records for assigned staff to ensure accurate and compliant timekeeping.
  • Partners with Operating Room teams, procedural areas, surgeons, and clinical stakeholders to address instrument fulfillment needs and resolve workflow or service concerns.
  • Serves as a key resource for escalating, tracking, and resolving service issues and instrument availability challenges.
  • Ensures adherence to organizational policies, work instructions, manufacturer IFUs, and regulatory standards including AAMI ST79, The Joint Commission, OSHA, and CMS.
  • Generates, interprets, and maintains operational and quality performance reports (e.g., Liaison service activity, instrument availability trends, metrics dashboards).
  • Leads and supports performance improvement initiatives, including occurrence report follow-up, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Reinforces a culture of safety, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
  • Supports departmental projects directed by the Department Manager, including workflow redesign, education rollouts, and readiness for inspections or accreditation surveys.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
