Requirements

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • Minimum three (3) years in a Central Processing Department or equivalent, including extensive knowledge of surgical instruments, supplies, decontamination, and sterilization techniques.
  • IAHCSMM Certification and/or CBSPD certification – Required
  • Licenses: Central Processing Specialty Certification.
  • Associate Degree or equivalent education required.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous leadership experience preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – Preferred
  • Bilingual and/or English-Spanish speaking preferred.
  • Ability to work with culturally diverse population.
  • Central Processing course completion preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees personnel engaged in processing, decontaminating, sterilizing, and delivering a wide variety of patient care items and surgical instruments according to established policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates, develops, and maintains functions of Central Sterile with all user departments.
  • Maintains proper storage and adequate inventory of designated surgical instrumentation.
  • Monitors equipment distribution and maintains accurate records.
  • Inspects area daily and takes corrective action when situations do not meet standards or requirements.
  • Ensures maintenance of established quality assurance program standards by performing item sterilization tests, interpreting data and graphs, and verifying correct operation of sterilizers.
  • Oversees and assists with decontamination and sterilization of reusable equipment returned from user departments.
  • Ensures that department policies are reviewed annually and updated at least every three years or as necessary.
  • Reviews sterilization records for accuracy and completeness.
  • Identifies issues and initiates process changes in collaboration with the OR Manager.
  • Actively participates in committees to improve patient care.
  • Actively participates in additional assignments within the department.
  • Acts as mentor and preceptor for new personnel.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
