About The Position

The Sterile Processing Technician II is responsible for decontaminating, inspecting, assembling, sterilizing, and distributing surgical instruments, implants, supplies, and equipment throughout the medical center. This role maintains accurate documentation, supports case cart preparation, operates sterilization and decontamination equipment, and assists with training other Sterile Processing Technicians. The position requires flexibility to work across all UCSF Medical Center locations. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Current certification as a Sterile Processing Technician through an accredited organization (CRCST/IAHCSMM or CSPDT/CBSPD)
  • Minimum of one (1) year of Sterile Processing Technician experience
  • Knowledge of all Sterile Processing areas, including: Decontamination Inspection, Assembly & Packaging Sterilization of medical devices Quality control and sterilization record keeping Distribution of sterile products Case cart preparation and quality assurance
  • Ability to operate sterilizers, washers, and ultrasonic cleaners
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Basic computer skills (Windows OS, keyboard, mouse)
  • Ability to perform multiple complex tasks with attention to detail
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and standard precautions
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods

Nice To Haves

  • Active certification as CRCST (IAHCSMM) or CSPDT (CBSPD)

Responsibilities

  • Assemble, inspect, and package operating room, clinic, endoscopic, and house instrument sets according to manufacturer guidelines, professional standards, and electronic count sheets
  • Identify, inspect, and assemble specialty instruments, power equipment, laser, and endoscopic instruments
  • Perform operational checks to ensure functionality, sterility, and cleanliness of instrumentation
  • Decontaminate surgical instruments using approved cleaning agents, disinfectants, and equipment
  • Disassemble, sort, clean, and process reusable instruments while maintaining accurate disinfection records
  • Operate and maintain sterilization equipment, ensuring all parameters are met prior to release
  • Load and unload sterilizers and maintain accurate sterilization documentation
  • Prepare and maintain accurate surgical case carts using OR preference cards and picklists
  • Coordinate with operating room staff to ensure timely delivery of required supplies
  • Monitor inventory levels, identify shortages, and maintain sterile supply inventory through par levels and stock rotation
  • Assist other Sterile Processing Technicians and serve as a resource for newly hired or agency staff
  • Maintain efficient workflow through effective communication with departments and team members
