About The Position

The Material and Process Engineer’s role is to develop and implement manufacturing processes, and material solutions in order to improve manufacturing efficiency, product quality, and support new business development efforts with a focus on advanced composite hardware.  This position interfaces with the Quality team to reduce non-conformance issues, and works directly on the manufacturing shop floor in support of production. Another primary responsibility is to author and maintain M&P specifications, material property test reports, business development technical packages, and share ownership of legacy manufacturing instructions. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science or equivalent experience and registration
  • 2-5 years relevant industry experience preferred
  • Experience with advanced composite manufacturing of aircraft or spacecraft components
  • Experience with the following: Out-of autoclave, autoclave, wet lay, filament winding, and primary structure bonding; thermosetting resins and their characterization; experience with high temperature materials preferred
  • Experience with mechanical and physical property testing of materials and hardware
  • Strong understanding of ASTM test methods, and military/commercial M&P specifications.
  • Knowledge of CAD/CAE softwares, basic understanding of CATIA and/or SolidWorks
  • Self-motivated, able to multi-task, work independently on assignments with minimal oversight or direction, quality-oriented and safety conscious
  • Possesses strong mechanical aptitude as well as creativity in solving problems; able to track overall goals and “see the big picture” while focusing on details
  • Excellent communication and customer relationship skills
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must hold or be able to obtain a DoD SECRET clearance

Responsibilities

  • Work directly on the manufacturing shop floor giving hands-on support to manufacturing engineers and technicians
  • Research and perform screen testing for extreme environment material applications
  • Write test plans in support of materials testing, using a Design of Experiment approach
  • Execute and evaluate material property testing for the development of B-basis design allowables, quality assurance, and engineering test requirements
  • Author and maintain legacy material and process specifications, create new specifications
  • Develop solutions to non-conformance issues, consult with Quality, analyze trends, reduce frequency
  • Utilize strong written and verbal communication, technical report writing skills, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Support proposal/presentation preparation for business development and market surveys
  • Review designs for cost, manufacturing, and quality assurance issues
  • Provide technical support to customers
  • Mentor and act as a resource for more junior engineers
