About The Position

The Student Hourly Assistant, under general supervision, will assist the Information and Impact Center with providing communications support to the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences.

Requirements

  • Presently enrolled at Prairie View A&M University for at least nine (9) graduate or six (6) undergraduate semester credit hours during the term in which the work is to be done.
  • Must be in good academic standing (SAP) as demonstrated through your college; minimum 2.0 GPA
  • No prior experience necessary
  • For work eligibility during a summer term, a student must be enrolled for at least three (3) graduate or undergraduate semester credit hours during the term in which the work is to be done or preregistered at least six (6) undergraduate semester hours or nine (9) graduate semester hours for the upcoming fall term.
  • Ability to work effectively and independently to meet target goals and deadlines
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and to multi-task
  • Must be responsible

Nice To Haves

  • Excellent communication and journalism skills (writing, punctuation, and spelling)
  • Understanding of news values, where a story lies, and what angle to take with a story
  • Strong knowledge of news writing and news judgment
  • Strong knowledge of AP Style
  • Ability to write in a professional manner that is acceptable to university administration
  • Ability to conceptualize, plan, and manage projects from start to finish with limited supervision
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, email, and internet research
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Flexible availability both in and outside of office, and able to monitor social media sites
  • Able to work independently or on a team
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented work style
  • Able to produce quality work while adhering to deadlines
  • Photography and videography skills, including framing and composition, lighting, and audio
  • Knowledge of basic mass communication principles

Responsibilities

  • Works closely with IIC staff members to compose news stories for the CAHS home page, newsletters, magazines, and other marketing materials
  • Assists with editing CAHS web pages and maintaining the department’s photo database
  • Develops engaging content for CAHS social media channels
  • Takes photographs and/or videos when applicable to accompany news stories and social media posts
  • Assists with CAHS virtual meetings and events
  • Performs other duties as assigned
